1. SHAUN OF THE DEAD

The best zombie movie since DAWN OF THE DEAD, SHAUN works as both a gory horror movie and a biting comedy about how the everyday world sucks the life right out of us. For sheer laugh-out-loud comedy it's hard to beat this film's first hour, and for non-stop rollercoaster action it's hard to beat this film's last thirty minutes. Even Peter Jackson liked it, so you know it's good.

2. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

Stunning, challenging, provocative and uncompromising are a just a few words to describe this complex and bleak portrayal of a young man's journey through time. Unlike most time travel movies where one is able to change the past for the betterment of the future, BUTTERFLY EFFECT dares to show us what might REALLY happen if one meddles with the past. The results are endlessly thought provoking. Ashton Kutcher proves he is an actor to be reckoned with as he goes through every possible emotion in an unflichingly honest manner.

3. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS

One of the finest Christmas movies of the past ten years, this is an affectionate comedy with a profound theme: we must never forget the importance of Christmas and how much it means to those around us. Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis turn in adroit comedy performances that are almost good enough to make us forget the dreadful Ben Affleck vehicle, SURVIVING CHRISTMAS.

4. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

This is Charlie Kaufman's best film so far because this time he adds some genuine heart to his incessantly wacky scenario. As the befuddled protagonist, Jim Carrey turns in one of his most restrained and convincing performances, but it's Kate Winslet who steals the show.

5. THE GIRL NEXT DOOR

A terrific coming of age movie that manages to make the porn world entertaining. Those who claim it's a ripoff of RISKY BUSINESS are missing the point. THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is an unabashed homage to 80's teen films filtered through the lens of a new millenium.

6. SIDEWAYS

Alexander Payne's tale of two male buddies who are approaching middle age in a decidedly ungraceful manner is boosted by two of the best lead performances of the year (Paul Giamatti and Thomas Church). In supporting roles, both Virginia Mayo and Margaret Cho add a feminine perspective to the movie that keeps it from being just a whiny male comedy.

7. FIRST DAUGHTER

Katie Holmes is at her charismatic best in this sweet and smartly scripted tale that boasts a fresh and original premise concerning a young woman's quest to find love while being daughter to the President of the U.S. Just when you think you know where the story's going, the movie delivers a nice twist/revelation that forces you to reassess everything you've seen before.

8. GARDEN STATE

Zach Braff makes an extremely impressive directorial debut with this moving tale of a young man who must come to terms with his life after his mother passes away. He gets a lot of help from Natalie Portman, who is positively effervescent in a quirky yet realistic role.

9. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR

Director Paul Anderson continues his unpredictable career by following up PUNCH DRUNK LOVE with this dark and witty take on the Alien/Predator franchises. Sure, it doesn't really add up to much, but the kinetic battles and stylish visuals make this one hell of a ride.

10. THE VILLAGE

M. Night Shyamalan proves once again that he is the undisputed master of the twist ending. Even moreso than THE SIXTH SENSE, this movie's carefully constructed plot gives way to a shocker of a revelation that left more than few audiences gasping. The real mystery is: How can Shyamalan possibly top this?

10. VAN HELSING

Critics complained that this movie was too much like a videogame. Well, duh! That's what it's supposed to be like, morons! Director Stephen Sommers jacks up the action to such a fever pitch that it's difficult not to become totally overcome by the movie's relentlessly rich visual overload. But give credit where credit is due. No movie looked more stunning or visually creative as this one. And Kate Beckinsale may have been the movie's best special effect.

Paul Anderson: British hack who "directed" "AVP: Alien Vs. Predator," "Resident Evil," "Event Horizon" and "Mortal Kombat."
