If you like ___, then you'll like ___. Except you don't...
You see these kinds of recommendations all the time, where people say "If you liked that movie, then you'll also like this movie". Sometimes things work out that way, but a lot of times they don't.
Best example for me is Adaptation (which I just watched again last night). I think it's a great movie that was very well conceived and executed. Of course, the immediate response to that is "well then you'll probably also like Being John Malkovich". Well I hated Being John Malkovich. I just never bought into it, and thought it was too off-the-wall.
Another example I've heard a lot is "if you like Arrested Development, then you'll like Royal Tennenbaums". I absolutely love Arrested Development, but found Tennenbaums to be a royal, unfunny bore.
I'm not really talking about when the link between two movies is made as part of the film's marketing, but actual recommendations you may have heard or made.

At FYE they stick things like that in the DVD section. When I was there last week, they had one that said "If you like Star Wars, you'll love THX 1138!" I'm not too sure about that one.

Loved the Ring (US version). Was recommended the Japanese version. Thought it SUCKED! The US version relayed the story like a mystery or detective story. There seemed to be alot to it.
The Japanese version relayed the story as "oh, I'm psychic" and out of the blue the story just gets narrated to you. Stupid.

I loved Slacker and Richard Linklater's next few and was really waiting for subUrbia to come out. I did not care for it at all.

Sorry, but not really. Someone please tell me what is funny about Danny Glover falling into a ditch

Tell me what isn't funny about Danny Glover falling in a ditch? If he hit his crotch on the way down it would be comic gold!

Royal Tenenbaums is great! I think Royal Tenenaums is more accessible than Rushmore whereas if you liked Rushmore you would Royal Tenenbaums but not vice-versa.
Being John Malkovich and Adaptation are nothing alike.

I felt the same way. I liked Rushmore but thought Royal Tennenbaums was very unfunny. I love quirky but this just didnt work for me.

Maybe they just need to be more realistic. It's pretty stupid to say "If you liked X you'll love Y!" just because that's probably untrue most of the time. But if they said "If you loved X you'll like Y!" it'll be true more often than not. Thing is, that's not enthusiastic enough.
And I definitely don't like Pulp Fiction.

Somebody told me once if I liked Star Wars I would love Battle Beyond the Stars. No joke.
Another one, but not nearly as bad, was if I liked Office Space, I would love Haiku Tunnel. I thought Haiku Tunnel sucked.

You can kind of add another one to the list. While I didn't dislike Pulp Fiction the first time I saw it, it had absolutely no rewatchability for me (unlike Jackie Brown, which I probably watch at least once every couple of months). So, for all intents and purposes, I don't like Pulp Fiction now (or at least wouldn't choose to watch it).
