Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
I finally watched this last night (after being a life-long Scorsese fan and having bought the boxset when it came out) and it's such a fantastic film. I loved it completely. It just got better and better the longer you spent with Alice and her son. And some of the dialog was incredible. "DOn't look back or you'll turn into a pillar of shit." Classic!
The weird thing was that I found the diner scenes distracting through no fault of the film. Vic Tayback, who played the same character in the sitcom version, was just too familiar. It made it weird to watch. But that aside (and, again, that's not the film's fault) this was just an outstanding film that I heartily recommend.

I remember seeing this as a kid when it first came out in theaters. Excellent film that holds up surprisingly well over time. I've always felt that this film had one of the best opening beginnings I've ever seen; from the dynamic opening title sequences to the way Alice's new life will take shape through tragedy.
Another overlooked little gem that Ellen Burstyn starred in but I never see referenced (or even having a DVD release for that matter), is a film called "Resurrection." In the 1980 film, which Burstyn received a Best Actress nomination for, she plays a woman who suddenly becomes an actual healer after a horrific car accident. The film doesn't take the usual Lifetime approach to the subject. It was quite inventive and completely absorbing. I would love to have this on DVD.

I loved discovering this little nugget in the Scorsese box set. I think it is a very good film. The kid is so funny and annoying just like some kids really act. Kristoferson put in another solid performance. I'm starting to appreciate him more and more lately. Burstyn is very very good in this.

The Academy apparently agreed. Back in 1974, "Alice" received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Diane Ladd). And Burstyn won the Oscar as Best Actress for her role here.

Absolutely terrific film - another (of so many) fine "small" American films from the 1970's.
Jodie Foster's speech about Tucson (my longtime and current hometown) absolutely crack me up everytime I watch this movie. To quote Homer Simpson, "It's funny because it's true."

I also saw this when I was a kid and really liked the movie. I hope to get it soon (it's on my Christmas wish list) and revisit the movie. You gotta love those 70's trends of making hard hitting dramas in to wacky sitcoms!

for this one - which clearly shows the wide range pf material that Scorsese can handle with great skill.
