my experience at AFI

last week I got a call from Amoeba records that I had won a fest pass, which allows you into the tribute, the centerpiece gala and any other movie i want that isn't a gala. I was a bit bummed I wasn't allowed into Bad Education but last night certainly made up for it.

i went to the pedro almadovar tribute. I sat literally 5 feet away from him while he spoke on some of the biggest films of his carrer. it was pretty cool. after that, i was giong to see this australian film called somersault. sadly, the tribute got out late so i missed it. i was then planing on seeing the new asia argento/marily manson film but then i heard of the PEDRO ALMODOVAR AFTER PARTY. right across the courtyard in the movietheater was the party. free open bar, dinner, hour's dovers, music. fucking everything. and the HOTTEST women.

that was fun

tonight im going to the CENTERPIECE GALA screening ofmerchan of venice, with al pacino. i guess i actually get to walk the red carpet and stuff.

so i plan to see as much as i can and i'll return with my reviews. if anyone lives in the LA area and can get to the arclight, try and go to the festival for at least one movie

From: Washington DC
and to those who live in the Washington DC area, AFI's Silver Theatre in Silver Spring Maryland is beautiful as well. Theatre One is a spacious THX - Dolby Digital equipped auditorium and can playback 70mm films flawlessly.

However, the recent European Union Film Festival this last past weekend was not so perfect - since it's the second year in the "new" theatre, not all the kinks are worked out. Movies got scuddled around to and from the main large theatre to the two other much smaller auditoriums - which in one case led many not to see a key crictically praised 'Cannes' film: "Kontroll" (which is incidently is slated to get released stateside by Think!Film sometime in 2005).

The AFI's Silver Theatre defining film festival though is the diverse and fantastic SilverDoc's documentary film showcase which in short time has and is becoming a premier North American docu-festival.

Fall's annual Central America Film Festival is also a treasure trove of current feature length and short films from restrospective Central American countries.

All in all one of these days I want to see experience a film at the arclight since everyone seems to rave about it.

saw 2 films so far. trying to see more, but its difficult living an hour away and going to school.

merchant of venice was really great, and im not a fan of shakespeare. the movie had a very strong look to it with great acting. pacino was interesting as shylock, but i think he pulled it off. best performance was either jo finnes or jeremy irons. the female lead was amazing too.
Costumes, sets, cinematography was fine and good but ntohing special. considering they shot in venice i thought the film would have a little something extra to it.

B+

yesterday i tried to see a very long engagement but was told my pass didn't allow me in. i was bumed, but ended up seeing the greatest film i have ever seen instead. YESTERDAY was an amazing film. YOU MUST SEE THIS. it was directed by the guy that did cry, the beloved country and is about a south african woman dealing with raising a daughther while dealing with her AIDS. Astonishing film.
