Affleck Blasts Kevin Smith

http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/#celeb7

Ben Affleck has made an astonishing swipe at long-term pal, director Kevin Smith - accusing him of exploiting teenage fans of his cult films. Affleck has appeared in five of Smith's films, starting with 1995's Mallrats and most recently this year's Jersey Girl. But Smith was reportedly upset Affleck snubbed the DVD launch of Jersey Girl - and Affleck has hit back while publicizing new movie Surviving Christmas. He told The Scoop, "It wasn't enough that I went to Vegas to play in his lame charity poker tournament for the DVD launch of Jersey Girl, but I also had to go out to his f***ing store where he's opening a store where all he's doing is selling more T-shirts of him and his jacka** friend (Jason Mewes) and he's roped in an entire generation of kids into thinking it's worth spending $30 on and $50 if he signs it. I mean the whole thing is a complete travesty and he wanted me to participate in it and I won't do that."

aintnosin 11-01-04 08:51 AM

No chance of that Jersey Girl sequel now, I guess....

Charlie Goose 11-01-04 08:54 AM

I sense a lot of Affleck-bashing and Smith-deifying about to descend upon this thread.

Troy Stiffler 11-01-04 08:58 AM

Other than the Celebrity Poker comment, I have no problems with what he's saying.

Poor guy. He really needs to be in a good movie again.

Dr. DVD 11-01-04 09:02 AM

This just makes Affleck look like an even bigger jerk in my eye.

Has anyone seen my career, anyone?.... anyone?

SFranke 11-01-04 09:16 AM

Ben, I think the time is right for you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on that wagon.

dick_grayson 11-01-04 09:22 AM

I like Ben and agree 100% about what Smith has been doing. I remember watching Jay and Silent Bob Strike back and feeling sick how all he did was cut and paste the same tired references into a movie and show off his hot wife. He used to be one of my favs but not anymore (and never again).

scott shelton 11-01-04 09:29 AM

Again, since when does anybody believe the IMDB?

marty888 11-01-04 09:31 AM

They've both been behaving like assholes recently - which is probably why they were friends in the first place. -wink-

Crocker Jarmen 11-01-04 09:51 AM

I can't tell how serious he is making these comments. He's said some nasty stuff about Smith and his movies on the DVD commentaries (in a joking manner, ofcourse).

Exactly.

 It all sounds like bullshit to me.

Groucho 11-01-04 10:08 AM

That doesn't sound like something Affleck would say, even if he thought it. Smith pretty much helped MAKE his career.

Sessa17 11-01-04 10:13 AM

How either of these two guys still have careers is beyond me. I hate Smith as a person & his work, & I just hate Afflecks work, I actually think he is a good guy.

raven56706 11-01-04 10:25 AM

Looks like Ben and JLO actually made a good couple

She played Missy.

That is exactly what I was thinking too. I can't really tell if he is being serious or not, but I am guessing that he was joking around, and *gasp* imdb took it out of context.

Link_182 11-01-04 11:10 AM

I don't think this is serious. It would be quite funny if they started a fake Affleck/Smith fued though. Then Affleck could end up having a short cameo in Clerks 2 anyway to end it. But it's imdb, can't take it seriously.

C-Mart 11-01-04 11:43 AM

In the View Askew message boards, Kevin posted in the thread about this and said that Ben was joking around... he even knew that Ben wouldn't be at the Stash signing in LA.

fumanstan 11-01-04 11:48 AM

I figured it wasn't anything serious. Both of them rule :)

Fok 11-01-04 01:11 PM

I'm smell some BS cooking up here.

Abob Teff 11-01-04 01:14 PM

I am a Kevin Smith fan, but have long thought that he is a merchandise whore. Don't all of his DVDs feature segments in his store?

I am not a Ben Affleck fan by any means . . . and this is nowhere near as funny as his defense of Pedro Martinez throwing Don Zimmer to the ground in last year's ALCS.

As for the comments, I knock and call bullsit too.

PopcornTreeCt 11-01-04 01:32 PM

Well I don't believe he said it. I've always suspected Ben Affleck having those feelings though. I mean Kevin Smith did help start Affleck's career, but it seems that Smith won't ever let Ben forget that. And Ben keeps doing these movies for him as favors because Kevin can't get any other A-list stars.

I don't think there are any examples that would show that to be true.

So you're comparing him to Lu¢a$? :p

The original story came from rumormonger/whore Jeanette Walls of MSNBC. It's pretty obvious Affleck was joking, at the same junket he described his own re-writes on Surviving Christmas as "sacred".

Dr. DVD 11-01-04 02:55 PM

Something similar happened to Smith over the ending of Planet of the Apes (2001) a few years back. That was another case of not being able to read sarcasm in print.

calhoun07 11-01-04 03:11 PM

And Affleck goes on to say that he said it in love, and Applegate commented "that's friendship." So once again IMDB takes something completely out of context and they are the ones looking like a fool.

nodeerforamonth 11-01-04 03:12 PM

Sounds like he was just taking some friendly jabs at Smith. No big deal. Affleck gets alot of jabs from Smith all the time.

All in good fun.

Well how about the fact that Kevin Smith has never made a movie with a star bigger than Ben?

I would venture to guess Ethan Suplee is a bigger star then Ben.

duff beer 11-01-04 05:06 PM

The entire "Kevin Smith Group" needs to be put in a ditch, and shot in their backs. With the exception of Matt Damon.

slop101 11-01-04 05:45 PM

Affleck says the same exact things on the Jersey Girl dvd extra where it's just him and Smith - Affleck blasts Smith (and vice-versa) about being a merchandising whore and Smith makes fun of his movies. They alway do this and it's always funny, 'cause it's true

Wait...so does that mean Affleck *wasn't* the bomb in Phantoms??? ;)

Jackskeleton 11-01-04 10:37 PM

I like smith, his store is cool and I have seen him in there twice already. Really cool to talk to and he was talking Batman animated series last time I went.

I don't mind the store at all.

I wouldn't automatically assume that has to do with being unable to get a big star. Especially considering that much of Smith's work is done with Ben in mind.

And while they may not be "A-list" stars, Smith didn't seem to have trouble finding actors to show up in Dogma or Jay and Silent Bob, like Chris Rock (back when he was still super popular), George Carlin, Salma Hayek, or Alan Rickman.

j_sutton 11-01-04 11:24 PM

One note: Wasn't Jersey Girl one of Affleck's more successful movies (of late)?

Who's doing who a favor anyway?
