Saw Review

So I finally got a chance to catch this film last night at a midnight showing, I've been anticipating its release ever since the trailer for it surfaced online several months back. First and foremost, if you're planning on seeing this film tonight or this weekend, or relatively soon -- don't let anyone talk to you about it, don't read anything about it, just go and see it with no expectations.

The film will undoubtedly draw similarities to such classic films as Seven and Cube with stylistic and thematic elements reminiscent of more recent films as Thirteen Ghosts and Strangeland, and in a way it's a combination of the latter, the film resorts to what horror films used to be, a roller coaster ride by any other name. The acting is subpar at times, not being able to mention specifics without spoilers so I'll avoid, but IMHO isn't bad enough to spoil what's honestly one of the more decent mainstream US horror releases as of late---though I fail to recall many significant horror films noted for remarkable acting.

If you find yourself grouped with those who thought Scream was the greatest movie because it so cleverly pointed out the obvious in a genre film, then you'll likely be too busy telling everyone you're with what you think is going to happen and how everything being done is wrong, if you're willing to take the story and visuals for what they're worth, it's an entertaining experience in the nature of the horror films long since removed.

Undoubtedly you're going to see film buffs over-analyze this film to death, simply put, were it a foreign picture it would be a "masterpiece" yet due to the wide release this is seeing, things will be over-criticized by many and under-appreciated by others, it's a toss up worth judging for yourself if only for the experience of it all.

Overall rating: Recommended

I saw the film Wednesday, great movie! Although the acting was a little sketchy at times it keeps you watching. The ending has a twist, although I already knew it because someone spoiled it for me a couple of days back, the ending will somewhat come as a surprise. All in all, this movie is way better then 'The Grudge'

iamOrokoSaki's review seems positive, but at the same time very defensive and apologistic. It's rare when a rave review makes me less interested in a film.

"a little sketchy?"

Yikes, Cary Elwes gives the worst performance of the year, possibly of the last ten years.

I went to see this last night. I never heard so many people laugh, you'd think you were watching a comedy. I had high hopes for this one. I liked the concept of the movie. But overall, I was disappointed with it.

Not one scare in the movie, a waste of Danny Glover and one truly laughably bad scene depicting cops as utter morons, but other than that I liked it, Grudge was better.

Hmmmmmm............ I can't say I really enjoyed this film.
It has some really cool parts, but overal it just didn't sit right. I'm tired of movies having shocking endings at the end of them. Endings like this just rune movies for me. I do admit parts of the twist was kinda cool, but I can't remember how to post spolier tags so I wont post it. What did danny glover have a whole 10 sentences in this fick? Shit coming to this I thought he was the lead character. I really like danny glover so thats makes me sad he didn't have a larger part. I really think they should have made it 30 mins longer and had some more character development specially with glovers character. I would have rather had more of a detective type of movie like silence of the lambs. But I guess they didn't want to be considered copy cats and tried something new.
The lead character is the guy from Robin hood men and tights so there were several times during the movie where I just laughed at his acting skills. Towards the end it was very unconvincing for me and was quite helerious.
On the other hand I do think they could make a pretty awsome video game on this concept. Give the player so many hours to figure out how to get out of a room or they die. Have several different senerios. I'd buy it.
The directing style of this reminded me of rob zombie's house of a thousand corpses. Alot of effects remind you of something you would see in a music video. Some of it was quite stylish. Some of it seemed over the top at times.

Rating 3.2/5. it's better than alot of crap I've watched lately, but it could have been so much better had they given some more character development to danny and more of a police investigation story line. I'd say just go see it if you dieing to watch something because it's halloween. If not I'd wait and rent it.

I really liked this movie, although I agree with most of the negative points brought up (bad acting, hammy scenes, dumbass characters, etc).

Overall, it was different enough and kept me guessing enough to enjoy it. I would recommend it.

I thought this was a rare film that was hurt by overhyping. I'm a loyal Fango reader and browse websites like bloody-disgusting.com, so everywhere some one was praising it.
Slashers and serial killer movies are my favs, and I also do a lot of reading on actual killers, so too say the least I've seen it all.
Two things were triggering a red light in my head:
Spoiler:

1) No way Cary could saw off his foot; blood loss or he would finish half-way and pass out.
2) the hyper movement of the camera when the show a car chase or the victims perdictiment.

Defiantely, better than Twisted or Taking Lives. But after a nice set-up, seemed a little too average afterwards.

Grade: C+

I despised it. I watched Seven today to wash this movie out of my mouth. The idea, if executed correctly, could have worked, but... it's just so laughable and the acting was horrendous. Everyone was laughing hysterically at the last 1/3rd or so. That car chase is the worst thing I've ever seen filmed... just all around horrible movie.

To be fair, I don't think movies like Saw should be held to any kind of realistic standard. So in that sense, I don't agree with trigger #1. If you don't agree with that, I'd argue that it is possible to saw off a limb. The dude was a doctor (a surgeon no less), so it probably wasn't his first time doing something like that. Also, people have sawed off their own limbs before. Remember the hiker who did the chop-chop with a small knife only a couple years ago? Crazy things happen in crazy circumstances.

That said, the car "chase" scene was almost laughable. And yeah, the hyper-editing was annoying at almost all the other parts as well.

Horrible movie, don't waste your time on it, if you are on the fence to see it. The 3rd act is so bad, it's laughably bad, and bewildering. I feel bad for most of the cast in this movie, I'd be embarrassed if I were Cary Elwes, his acting was so over the top and horribly inconsistent. Danny Glover needs to find a new agent if he's being reduced to do movies like this.

I give it 1 star, or a grade of D.

Spoiler:
You mean to tell me, the whole time they were in that room, nobody ever saw the body breathing? WTF?!

No kidding!

Spoiler:
if I had heard the ramblings of the 2 guys chained to the pipes, I'd be cracking up all that time.

Hmm I was going to see this tonight, but decided to skip it. Was thinking of 'maybe' seeing it tomorrow. But the horrible reviews are really making me hesitant.

Out of curiosity. What trailers were shown before the film? I have heard reports of Haute(High) Tension being shown at most showings. While The Devils Rejects show up on some showings. I would love to see the trailers. Since downloading them has failed. I hate Windows Media Player. I get all the audio, but hte video always freezes on one shot. So I never actually 'see' the trailer.

I saw it this afternoon and got trailers for both High Tension and The Devil's Rejects (and at least five other trailers).

I have to agree with Jonpeter, if yoyu visit horror sites, and even some movie sites, the advance hype on a movie generally leads to disappointment. My friend generally feels like these sites will give a movie a glowing review just for the fact they like the blood and gore in the movie. He cited Dead End, Haute Tension, Cabin Fever and Dead and Breakfast as some films he felt got TOO much love on these sites and he generally thought they were bad. Me, I loved Haute Tension and thought Dead End was decent. Dead and Breakfast should be avoided.
