Shall We Dance? - US version
Now I don't like starting a thread of a film that I personally thought was terrible, but I'd like to know who else saw this and what they thought of it.
I couldn't believe how bad Miramax and the filmmaker's could eviscerate the uniqueness of the original.
Sans Stanley Tucci, every character and actor were bland and one-dimensional. J Lo's Paulina couldn't convey her sadness effectively, she just looked constipated. Richard Gere, all he had to do was smile - wow, what an acting stretch. Susan Sarandon and her distraught, overworked, clueless wife shtick - ugh. The film all played out like an adult after school special. Add to the mixture Bobby Cannavale's Chic and a cliched unbelievable twist - this movie falied on so many levels.
a penny for your thoughts?

I shuddered when I found out they were remaking it, and I shudder now.

From the perspective of a ballroom dancer I really enjoyed the movie for the dancing aspect. I haven't seen the original so I'm going to have to check it out once it comes out on DVD. From the perspective of a film buff this movie is light fluff. The acting, story, and direction was not up to par.

His resume includes some of the best movies made in the last several years, including Cure, The Eel, and Eureka.

Yes, Yakusho Koji is great!
While it was obvious going in that the cultural nuances of the original would be lost here, I thought the U.S. "Shall We Dance" was rather entertaining on its own merits. Gere showed a palpable joy in his enjoyment of dance (and has always looked fine in a tux), though the wife came across a bit moronic with the P.I. And they could have made better use of Tucci's character. While I don't really believe in marriage, I did appreciate her reasoning of why people marry as needing a "witness to their lives". I've seen much worse romcoms.
