What do you think is the #1 twist ending in movie history? (spoilers)

I've never seen No Way Out. Don't know a single about it except Kevin Costner is in it, right? Considering how many people have brought it up here, I should probabely go out and rent it.

As for best twist of late, I'd have to say Matchstick Men was superb in that regard. I had NO idea.

i was gonna start another thread, but i searched and lookie what i found, i just saw Sixth Sense again on cable. well, end at least. a great twist that i am so glad didn't get spoiled prior. still holds up imo. just love the whole reveal to Willis' character. it's so hard to read the clues, though i'm sure billion did. so many great movies not even mentioned yet had great surprise or twist endings. i mean not so much twist as solving the riddles to the surprise, but still.
Knives Out being most recent and phenomenal way to get at it. Any other recent and use spoilers if want to spoil...
**edit** didn't even realize this was 16 yr bump...
So many since then:
Shutter Island
Now You See Me (maybe)
so many others, even The Departed had surprise ending...

Fight Club. That was my first immersive theater experience with a twist like that. So many came after. But that was my first. I was already engaged by the style ... like falling in love with an album the first time you hear it.
Twists, including ones very similar to Fight Club started popping up more. Possibly because of fight club. But that was my first.
I fell asleep watching Usual Suspects for the first time. And woke up two minutes before the end. Strange way to have a coveted twist ruined. So I never felt what it was like to find out for the first time.

yes, I know it’s not “#1 twist of all time”, but it sure is my favorite movie twist. Music fit perfectly and the closing shot was great.
funny this thread was started a couple weeks before “Saw” was released.
and a shoutout to “Primal Fear”, great ending too

no, i totally agree. i was shocked as hell by that and loved it and the franchise bc of it. sure the others suck balls, but i have soft spot for them all, even Costas Mandylor , but that last scene and the music (that would become theme) swelling. beautiful.

i don't think anyone mentioned Angel Heart. that was a pretty good one i didn't see coming and truthfully, still don't fully understand, but twist nonetheless...

Yes, it's hard to argue that The Sixth Sense has one of, if not the, greatest twists of all time. It proceeded to spawn a whole slew of gotcha-twist ending movies in its wake, for better or for worse (mostly worse). Seeing the movie in the theater, and not only being shocked by the twist but also getting to hear the audience's collective gasp, is one of my favorite movie-going experiences of all time.
Speaking of Shyamalan and his penchant for twists, I have such a love-hate relationship with The Village. Minus the ultimate twist (in a movie that arguably has three twists total), this movie fires on all cylinders for me. It's a shame that the final reveal, which I predicted the first time I saw it, casts such a shadow over the rest of the movie, because everything else works so very well, and the soundtrack is amazing. I really think if Shyamalan had come up with a better ending than the one he did, the movie would be a classic.

Not really. It starts out pretty decent but quickly starts slipping downhill. By the time the twist comes the movie has already gotten fairly boring. The twist though, takes a somewhat decent premise with a good cast and setting and throws it all out the window.
