Kiarostami -- where to start?
Since I've seen him praised by several members on this board, I was wondering if you guys could suggest which of his movies is best suited for an introduction to his work.
I was thinking of starting off with CLOSE UP...

IMO the best way to start would be with the 'trilogy'
Where is the Friend's Home
And Life Goes On...
Through the Olive Trees
However, none of those are available on DVD (one of the great tragedies of our time, IMO)
In lieu of that Close-Up is an excellent place to start.
I know it's a Criterion release, but you probably shouldn't start with Taste of Cherry. Although excellent, it's not his best work, and might be a little 'difficult' for a Kiarostami newbie.

Close-Up is an excellent film, but I find it to be a bit of an anomaly for him. I'd start with The Wind Will Carry Us.
Also agree with wendersfan that And Life Goes On... and Through The Olive Trees are amazing (haven't seen Friend's House) and hold off on Taste Of Cherry.

The Wind Will Carry Us is magical as whaaat mentioned. I am abou to see Ten, which I have had for sometime but never got around to view. I would begin with Taste of Cherry which I find hypnotic on a cerebral level. But that is just MHO.

I think And Life Goes On is easily his best film, but it sort of necessitates seeing Where is the Friend's House?. Close Up is interesting, but not as good as the aforementioned. Taste of Cherry is missable.

I just saw FIVE at the VIFF, and it was absolutely fantastic. Though I wouldn't recommen anyone starting with that particular film....
AND LIFE GOES ON is probably the most accessible film to start off with. But IMO films TEN, CLOSE-UP and FIVE are what I really believe are his best.
