I saw the movie last night. Great visuals, but the acting was horrible.

I actually wanted Rose to die because she was so annoying.

Iceskaarj 05-28-06 09:19 AM

great visuals, superb set and monster design, terrific pyramid head, solid acting, interesting story and nice gore...

ah...forgot to mentinon the stunning soundtrack...

simply put: awesome movie... and the best VG-adaption EVER.

Just saw this last night when I purchased the DVD as a blind buy. I thought it was a pretty darn good flick. The Sean Bean stuff did take you out of the atmosphere of the rest of the film somewhat but I did like some of the crossover stuff
Spoiler:
(smelling his wife's perfume and sensing her at the end)
. I found the plot pretty straight foward (perhaps a little too straight foward in parts) so, as someone who nevger played the games, I never felt lost. All in all a very good film.

There is one thing that confuses me, though.
Spoiler:
Am I right to assume that "the Reaper" replaced Sharon (or merged with her) when Sharon opened her eyes and that's why Rose was still stuck in that limbo? If so, why?

ShaunoftheDead 08-28-06 08:35 AM

"Silent Hill" pleasantly surprised me when I rented it this weekend. I usually don't go for the CGI/effects laden horror pics and didn't intrigue me in the least when it came out, but from the buzz around here, I picked it up.

It was very good. Eerie in all the right places. The music played perfectly in key scenes and the acting and story were very decent.

I am just so amazed that this is a game and if pretty faithful, one damn good, scary game that I wish I could have played.

AndyCleveland 08-28-06 08:19 PM

just watched the dvd... i thought it was extremely boring, slow, and not scary at all. not to mention, the acting and cgi were both incredibly cheesy.

Best monsters.

...EVER.

I have to disagree. Pyramid Head was amazing but the rest were just......
meh.

Spectacular art direction and great sound design, but the screenplay and acting left a lot to be desired.

Is there a Gans commentary on the DVD? Does he mention the possibility of a sequel? Because the ending of the film allows them to make a sequel that could almost be a shot for shot remake of Silent Hill 2 (the video game).

RocShemp 08-29-06 01:02 AM

No commentary. I do hope there is a sequel.

Spoiler:
That final shot with Sean Bean sure was equal parts sad and eerie.

Supermallet 08-29-06 01:05 AM

Have you played Silent Hill 2?

Spoiler:
It's about a man whose wife dies in a car crash, and he wallows in guilt and misery. One day he gets a letter from her, telling him to come to Silent Hill. He goes there to look for her, and encounters Pyramid Head, who he finds out is a physical manifestation of his guilt and sexual frustration. So it wouldn't too much of a stretch to have a film where Sean Bean gets a letter from Radha Mitchell's character, telling him to come back to Silent Hill. And this one would allow Pyramid Head to be the main villain, as he should have been in the first place. :)

No. I've never played any of the Silent Hill games. The movie sure makes me want to play them, though.

almost every "suspense" scene was mostly cgi... the monsters, the sets, the fire effects. it looked incredibly cheesy.

RichC2 08-29-06 08:44 AM

There was a load of CG, and I agree most of it was obvious, some of it was cheesy some of it worked despite being so blatant. The barbwire scenes were particularly bad.

I love the movie's atmosphere, but the movie itself (the "follow the pictures" plotting, which is akin to the game and fine when playing not when watching, and the horrendous finale (last 30 minutes), but at least the ending was cool (last couple minutes).) is pretty lame on the whole.

That said, I'm glad I saw it, as the design and a few of the CG sequences are quite effective. Though I don't recall a single suspenseful moment in the movie.

If you liked the movie, then you'll LOVE the games. I certainly did, and I did it in the same order as you - movie then games. I hope you've got a PS2 so you can play 2, 3 (arguably the best), and 4 (XboX only has 2 and 4 - oh and all are available on PC too). I still favor 2, but that's because it's what got me started and because the storyline is so intense.

Yeah, I got a PS2. One of my co-workers told me he spotted a sealed copy of the first game at a Gamestop one town over from where I live. I'll see if I can get my hands on it. I also want to get my hands on the three sequels.

Supermallet 08-29-06 09:08 PM

They're all great games, but 2 will always be my favorite, if only for Pyramid Head and the lack of annoying mutant dogs.

RocShemp 08-29-06 09:17 PM

So Pyramid Head is only in the second game?

Also, from what you guys (and my co-workers) tell me, Pyramid Head is some sort of psycho-sexual manifestation of the guy in the second game. If so,
Spoiler:
why the heck did he appear in the movie and how did Dhalia summon him to kill that redhead that was throwing loose bits of the steps at her?

Supermallet 08-29-06 10:01 PM

Pyramid Head has a different purpose in the film than in Silent Hill 2. While Gans was careful to keep the film as accurate as he could, some things simply had to change for the adaptation. Now, he could have kept out Pyramid Head, but there's no guarantee there will be a Silent Hill sequel, and if there isn't, it would be a damn shame to have the only Silent Hill film not have Pyramid Head in it, as he is easily the most iconic creation from the series.

Plus, even though this follows the plot of Silent Hill 1 in many ways, Pyramid Head made a lot of sequences a whole lot scarier and cooler, so it was good to have him in it.

Yeah, that's kinda accurate ... strangely. I dare not get into any of the details because the cut scenes are pretty freakin' eerie and carry some definite punch.

Yep, I can concur with that as well. The first time you physically interact with Pyramid Head still lingers as one of my favorites experiences in the series. That, and (don't read if you haven't played 4)...
Spoiler:
In Silent Hill 4, once you look through the peep hole and the stuffed rabbit that had been looking in the opposite direction the entire length of the game all of a sudden is turning looking directly at you. It's around the time when the presence starts to REALLY take over the apartment and you are progressing pretty close to the end. That and the first time you pick up the first red note you wrote yourself underneath the door from the alternate dimension.

Supermallet 08-29-06 10:24 PM

Also, it's fun to play through all 4 games because 1 and 3 link together, as do 2 and 4 (although both links might be considered tangential, they're still fun to catch).

I ordered the Edko R3 edition of this today. The one with the DTS track. This thread has really made me want to watch the movie again.

Other than be a really cool monster, what was Pyramid Head's purpose in the movie?
Spoiler:
It looked lik Dhalia summoned him. If so, why would he chace after Rose and Cybil? Does he work for the Reaper or for Dhalia?

Be sure to post your thoughts when you get it. I love the sound on the R1 release and the R3 release tempts me due to i having a DTS-ES track. Too bad it doesn't have the cool canadian cover.

Spoiler:
Pyramid Head seems more of an all-purpose monster in the film, whereas in Silent Hill 2 he is a specific manifestation of the main character's emotional troubles. I'd say in the film he works for the Reaper, but as the Reaper is tied to the girl, and the girl loves her mother, Dhalia is granted some abilities (which is why she's able to survive in the Dark outside of the Church).

I hope that any Silent Hill sequel reveals Pyramid Head to be the ultimate manifestation of the Dark One, who temporarily granted power to the girl.
