Universal gets Land of the dead
http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=2756
cool.
Fangoria ssays this:
September 10: Universal lands LAND OF THE DEAD
Variety reports that Universal Pictures has acquired George Romero’s LAND OF THE DEAD and will release the film on October 21, 2005. LAND will complete the studio’s zombie trifecta, after their DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and SHAUN OF THE DEAD, the latter of which Universal helped finance and then moved over to sister company Rogue Pictures. FANGORIA has also learned the start date for filming: October 11. Romero has been casting in Toronto, where LAND will lens, for the last five weeks. So far, screen heavy Dennis (BLUE VELVET) Hopper has taken a role as a villain in the film, while the producers are negotiating to fill four other key roles with LA-based actors (several names being seriously bandied about will make Fangorians flip! Stay tuned). The rest of the players, to fulfill financing restrictions, will come from Canada. Check out our feature story here for FX artist Greg Nicotero’s preview of LAND. —Tony Timpone

I will be taking that night off work, and going to the first showing of a new Romero zombie movie. Guaranteed.
At the same time I have to admit I'm nervous about the idea. I think that Georgie boy had a sensability and a style for a certain time and place. I think he is someone like Brian DePalma, or Jon Landis, or Francis Ford Coppola, who, after fifteen or twenty years of greatness, lost it. I worry the resulting film will only remind me of how the mighty fall.
But I'd love it if I have to eat these words.

I understand your concern Corcker, but considering Bruiser is the only film he's made in over a decade, there's not much to judge his talent anymore. Hopefully it's great. I'm excited regardless of my wondering of what Romero is capable of these days.

Im so anxious to hear people's reactions to this movie after so much whining that Romero should have directed every damn zombie ever made recently. If this movie isnt the second coming (which I seriously doubt it will be) I hope people will honestly fess up. All I'm happy about is Romero getting some work because I think he has been crimninally underused and that he isnt going forward with that Diamond Dead flick which sounded like a train wreck from the get go.

Savini confirmed this info during a panel at DragonCon, so I'm stoked.
The film will be cheesy but very entertaining, and will still have a touch of Romero's de rigeur social commentary. I will see it opening day.

Glad to see this is coming out. I'll see it no matter what, but I hope it's better than Day of the Dead, which just didn't work for me (I love Night and Dawn).

I mention to everyone that wanted Romero to direct the Resident Evil movies to hunt down the japanese tv commercials he did for the games, theyre cheesy as shit. I persoanlly liked both RE movies and despite the many flaws they both had they captured almost to a tee certain elements and scenes from the games so that was a plus for me.

I'm ecstatic that George is getting the chance to finish his zombie series, but I'm a bit dismayed at the idea of having Dennis Hopper in it. As much as I like Hopper, I think Romero's movies work as well as they do because they all feature unknowns. I can totally suspend my disbelief that a guy has died, turned green, and is attacking another guy when I don't recognize either of them. When one of them is Dennis Hopper, I don't think it's going to work as well.

I think "Dawn" has its highlights, BUT-
I think it couldn've been a lot more. Those stupid bikers were plain boring. I wanted more zombie action, more the feeling that the main characters were actualy in deep shit rather than being to save their asees by blocking a door, for example.

I'm excited about this movie. Of course I'm sure we'll have more discussions about how speedy a zombie should be.

I don't know about that title either. It makes me think the film is going to be about a couple of guys who dig deep into the earth's core, and uncover a jungle full of zombie dinosaurs, cave-men and squids.

SOME SPOILERS--
Jack, if the movie had the huge sharks or alligators or spiders from the games, or giant earthworms from Code:Veronica would that have made you happy. You say the games are cheesy, but what are these movies? People for years mistakenly keep acting like the RE games are pure zombies and thats it, the games go off on freaky weird tangents that would look ridiculous being put on film by anybody. The STARS teams fighting the zombies looked cool, they got the costumes dead on, Jill looked and acted awesome, the Nemesis looked and acted hot for the most part, when he chases Jovovich that was straight from the game, the film also had many scenes of just pure desertion that were awesome, just showing a city in ruins as these people went through it, just like the game where you for the most part travel in an empty city and come across zombies once in awile, the games are not shoot-a-thons. Yes, the Nemesis turning was dumb, the fight between him and ALice was pointless and the ending was a little too protracted but I challenge anyone who went into this expecting a genre classic especially since it came from the same creative team as the first and im sure that was equally blasted by the same people.
