SO who noticed Godzilla in the newspapaer photo? They were showing all the cities attacked and when it got to Japan, there was a siloette of Big G on the right facing the robots.

There was also a nod to Lucas' THX1138 when it showed the scientist's address as 1138.

Don't forget that they landed on platform 327. Also notice the tow cables and the swimming monster on the island.

lots of nods to star wars... or me looking to deep at it.

I really hope Sky Captain can recoup its budget, it deserves it (as in make back 70 million... yes there's advertising, yes there's dvd sales, blah blah blah )

I was really looking forward to this. I loved the concept, the look, everything. And then - eh. What looked great in a trailer didn't work for 100 minutes. Digital was a poor choice, it should have been film. And frankly, I wasn't drawn in by the action. Like I said, I really wanted to like this, and it wasn't without its moments. Ultimately, though, I didn't see much difference between this and, say, The Mummy.

Too blurry - it was almost out of focus - I felt like I needed to get prescriptions for eye-glasses when it was done.

Lot of fun I thought, lighthearted and easygoing without being braindead and insultingly stupid. Shame it's not doing better, but it really is more of a specialty cult type movie anyway.

Well, I'm pleased as punch for Kerry Conran. Sky Captain may not be making impressive numbers, but still... here's a fella who got a NUMBER ONE movie on his first time out! That'll help him later, I'm sure...

Just got back from this movie. I'll just say that I haven't had so much fun watching a movie in a long long time. I loved it!

I do wish there was more Angelina Jolie though. I thought she did much better than Law or Paltrow, who were both a hair bland. For sharing top billing I think she was in the movie all of 15-20 minutes.

Ah, but Sierra... she was billed as
AND
ANGELINA JOLIE

See? There's that "AND"! She could have been in the film for TWO minutes.

First - I have been anxiously waiting for this movie and really wanted to see it. I knew going in what it would be like and I liked the look and style of the film based on trailers. I was well rested when I went to see it and in a good mood as well. Anyway - the movie just bored the shit out of me. I kept falling asleep throughout the thing. Boring as all hell. Lousy dull lifeless performances. I liked the style and look of the film in the first 10 minutes or so and for some reason it just knocked me out. My girlfriend hated it and said it was stupid (but didn't fall asleep). It's not that the film style went over my head or anything... i get it and I appreciate it and like that sort of thing. I don't know, for some reason it just struck me as unbelievably dull.

I had trouble suspending belief necessary to for it to be fun, fun, fun...but I did enjoy it. The plot holes bugged me, as the film processing after a while.

But it was creative, and interesting.

One question:

If their clothes were
Spoiler:
burned and she didn't bring any extra
, then how come
Spoiler:
she had on the same exact skirt, down to the rip so she could run, that she had one at the beginning of the movie
?

All in all...great world, but the fact that it was done by a first time writer and director very obvious.

I looooved this movie!!!

I loved the surreal look, the robots, the style, the story, and Gwenyth Paltrow never looked better.

I enjoyed this movie mostly on the behalf of Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law. I thought the were superb and very enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed their bickering at each other it had an innoscent fun feel to it that worked.

I thought the visual style worked beautifully, Paltrow has never been photographed better, she looked stunning. I particularly liked the beginning when we meet her character Polly Perkins, and where she is running through the city streets as when we first see "the machines." The film had such a splendid noirish look that I just loved, and the quick transitional fades and use of shadows across her face were fantasic.

I do think that the story suffer by being a little too long even though it's only 107 minutes. In the middle when Law and Paltrow get to Shangra La(sp?). The drama and action stay light and fun, but it doesn't become nearly as entertaining as other adventure films influenced by 30s and 40s era like Indiana Jones and Star Wars, but the presence of Paltrow and Law made this still an enjoyable summer movie in the fall season. ***/****

By the way, did anyone else this other movie nod, the marquee on the movie theater in the city reading "Wuthering Heights," the 1939 classic starring Sir Laurence Olivier?

Loved the look, but wasn't engaged by any of the action. The problem was I really didn't care about Sky Captain. He was the most generic character in the movie, and he was supposed to be the hero. He was easily overshadowed by Polly. Questionable acting aside, the Polly character was at least fleshed out (even if she was just a meld of Superman the Movie's Lois Lane and Raiders of the Lost Ark's Marion). I did like the banter and the relationship between Joe and Polly, and between him and Frankie. The Polly-Frankie rivalry thing should've been more of the movie, hell, the Frankie character was underused (or wrongly used).

The plot served its purpose, I guess, but it was pretty standard point a to point b type stuff... only the opening NYC city held any real surprise. Fun enough, and remarkable to look at, but missing several x-factors to be in the same league as the Indy films (or even The Rocketeer, IMO).

That confused me too at first, but they did address it.

Spoiler:
Right after SC & polly land the plane in the Tibetan camp, SC tells Polly to change clothes, because "this is no place for high heels." So Polly changes into arctic gear (pants, snow goggles, etc). THOSE are the clothes that were burned by the Shangra-La leader, because they'd been contaiminated with uranium. They gave her the "wooly mammoth" outfit (the weird long dress/coat) in Shangra-La, which I assume she wore until they got back to the plane, where she'd presumably left her reporter outfit.

well whenever it does hit, I'm buying it right away. Hopefully the low box office doesn't change Paramount's plan to have Conran direct Princess of Mars. That seems like material right up his alley, and I'd like to see him have a box office hit. I really enjoyed Sky Captain and think the man has got a lot to offer.

Saw this yesterday and really liked it.

I did cringe when Gwenyth said
Spoiler:
"We've got to save the animals." I mean, c'mon: you've got literally a few seconds to save all of humanity (and even more animals down on Earth) and you're thinking about some animals! Guess that's just her character.

And I thought the last line of the movie was great.

Was a good movie, the characters interaction was pretty funny....too bad they didn't explore more of that.

Rennervision, in regards to your allusion to
Spoiler:
King Kong
I thought the same thing (hey that large tree log over the crevasse looked awfully familiar).

Also was it me or did that large statue with the sword look alot like the one seen in the Tarna episode of "Heavy Metal"?
