So it's friggin Frank Oz's fault!
In the commentary for Empire Strikes Back, Lucas is talking about how they had to build the Dagobah set to mask the puppeteer, and he said it was then that he decided he would work to make digital characters that would move the way they wanted to move. So now we truly know where the genesis for the idea came from!

I don't think he needs to be changed either, but I was pretty impressed with the Yoda in AOTC. I didn't think they could pull it off.

Of course that was not the fault of the digital Yoda

I didn't mind fighting Yoda at all. I always figured he didn't get to be revered ass a badass Jedi just cos he talked funny.
What bothered me was the Kung-Fu pose. That was totally out of place and took me out of the scene for a moment. Considering that Lucas has gone on record to say that he almost cut the fight out because he was afraid people wouldn't take it seriously, I'm amazed that he didn't cut that one shot out. Other than that, digital Yoda was really cool.
