So, two things - even though I think Hero will do less business on Saturday (Subtitles?) (I hope not, but it just seems likely) it will still be #1 and make more than the $10m estimated for it. And two, the guy that said "Superbabies is doing better than Spider-man 2!" was right.

Why would people not see it because it's subtitled?? So was "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and I think another one that did well..what was it? oh yeah "Passion of the Christ".

I don't know, just a habit to put that down... and reactions a few people I know were getting at their showings.

You're right though. It's a lame excuse, but anything's possible.

Oh and on a sidenote, it's nice to see Collateral and The Bourne Supremacy holding up well for these past few weeks.

Subtitles not really vital for that one - a few people had a clue as to the plot line.

KIck ass for Hero! If "Anacondas" makes it to #1 at the box office after "Exorcist 4" and "Alien Vs. Predator" I will have given up all hope.

Great news about Hero. Glad its finding an audience despite Miramax's boneheaded handling of it.

Great to see Hero at number one. I'll be seeing this next week (been holding off to see it in the cinemas). It's success hopefully will convince Miramax to show some respect to these imports and maybe not rely on QT to get it released properly.

But then again...who knows. Still good numbers.

Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite both holding up pretty well. It would be nice if more studios financied low budget films.

I seen a couple of younger people walk out of the movie about 20 mins into the film. I dont know if it was because of the subtitles or not. I also heard some people bitchin in the movie about it not being dubbed so I think people will stay away from it because of the subtitles.

At the theater I was at, they were "warning" everyone when they bought tickets that Hero was subtitled. I told them good, that I preferred it that way, and they said some people didn't know beforehand and were apparently mad when they found out.

I dont think its sacrilege to tell people the movie has subtitles beforehand.

Dumb people who can't read probably won't like Hero. And a LOT of dumb people go to the movies, so it's only fitting.

Oh young one, you have much to learn. Subtitles in a film are usually a kiss of death. Passions was something different because it had, what was it? A religion behind it? But normally Subtitles are viewed by the industry as a bad thing. People.. your average movie goer goes into the theater to see the film and they hate reading.

Subtitles have been something that a studio wants to get away from or else you would see a lot more imported pictures here.

P.S. Title is misleading...

The movie itself would probably be lost on a lot of the people who "turned away" from it when hearing it was subtitled. So that said, them leaving angrily saved them 98 minutes. Same reaction, just faster.

Of course, after all, over the past 5 years we've had what.. 4 subtitled movies in wide release (including Hero). And since only two of those were huge successes thus far($100m+ for CTHD, $350m for Passion, jury is still out on Hero), it makes sense for them to want to get away from them.

teeheehee. (I include Amelie in there, which made $33m, but I'm not sure if that actually went Wide.. but it played here so I figure what the hell.) Oh and I forgot Iron Monkey which did only $14m.

I need to finish In the Mood for Love now dammit

I think they attribute the success of those films to not be the subtitles and if given the choice they would much rather not have subtitles as the main language of the film.

Passions was something that could not have been seen coming. Why else would every studio turn it away? (well there is that whole religion issue, but you know what I mean) Hero would have been another film that would have been in a few theaters much like Ju-on: The Grudge. Miramax tossed the coin and with some good marketing and name dropping of QT it pays off.

There is how many foriegn films that come to the U.S. that have success? Just because a few do doesn't mean that the gates have been broken down. Sure, a lot more are willing to go then say 5-10 years ago. But it's still a niche market and not everyone has opened up to the idea of reading during a film. Especially in this world were everyone needs to learn english for them to deal with us.

You should change the title to friday box office numbers. Very misleading. Even though I know that you posted this on a Saturday, I still thought it was going to for the entire weekend....

HAHAHAHHAHA. Silence you! This is the Weekend box office thread. Meaning that once the FINAL weekend numbers are out they will be posted in here.

The reason they start a thread for the weekend box office take is because regardless of them being out or not we can discuss the estimates from fridays take and what everyone thinks will be the final number and why based on their experience in said theaters.

I find it pretty stupid to create 10 threads for the weekend numbers. We don't need a thread for the friday numbers and another for the final numbers. they could all be housed in the same discussion thread.

not to mention that we already poked fun at that whole "this thread title is misleading" twice already. We can't predict the future. But atleast this is a place holder for the weekend numbers. It seems pretty stupid to complain about the misleading title. Especially since the weekend isn't over so it was beyond silly for you to believe that we have the final numbers in. We have an estimate. That's the best you are going to get for the moment. Deal with it. wait till the weekend is over or we get saturday numbers to make an educated guess on sundays numbers to get a final count on them.

But for the most part having it all be discussed here is the best idea.

Good... I hope they do stay away from it. We've got to be one of the few (or one of the only) countries in the world where the thought of having to read is enough to scare away most people from seeing a good movie. Subtitled films are rather common most other countries.
