also adds
"the young rebel who destroyed the death star, I have no doubt that he is the offspring of anakin skywalker"
I think the main complaint with this add on is the way that it feels phoned in and Ian totally drained any feeling out of it.

that's one of the worst things I've ever seen. there should be rules that you can't keep changing something after it's been released. that's like changing Beatles lyrics

The new dialogue is lousy, once again Lucas must make everything so obvious. Why does Vader ask "How is that possible?" Does he not know that he, himself, is Anakin? Does he not know about the birds and the bees? What does the Emperor think Vader knows about Anakin Skywalker? It raises more questions than it makes things clear, which is what I'm thinking Lucas was hoping for.

Pixy does have a point. and I have seen the New Return of the Jedi and I can honestly say that Vader still is surprised during his battle with luke that there is a sister.
Still, the delivery of the material is just phoned in.

Ziiiing!
the only thing I don't like about the new line is that it makes you seem like you do not know which rebel it was that blew up the death star. Like you somehow didn't see ANH before ESB.

I always thought if Vader was all big and bad, he'd sense how powerful the force was in Leia to begin with.

the big problem with the (unnecessary) additional dialouge is that it comes in the middle of the film, after an opening crawl that announces that the Empire is scouring the galaxy for Luke Skywalker, and after Vader makes the comment "that's it! the rebels are there...and i'm sure Skywalker is with them!"
now some of the more easy-to-please fans are finding all kinds of gymnastic excuses to justfiy why
- the emperor does not seem to know what his imperial forces are doing vis a vis this high profile terrorist (Luke)
- Vader would then make a comment "how is that possible" after he has already been shown being in dogged pursuit of this very same individual
- this is further compounded by Vader then turning right around and carrying on with "he's just a boy Obi Wan can no longer teach him".
he goes from recieving incredulous information to spouting specific detail without any pause.
the original version of the scene never tried to give the impression that this was the first time either of the two were made aware of Lukes presence- the dialouge never conflicted with the opening events of the film- the dialouge in the scene was about one specific thing- that there is a disturbance in the force due to Luke taking steps to become a jedi- and that he must be prevented from doing so.
he needs to be captured not becasue he is just a lucky terrorist- he needs to be dealt with in a specific fashion (i.e. turned) because he is now a potential jedi.
the new dialouge appears to try to do several, conflicting things.
but it can't and it looks stupid for trying to do so.
and if all that looks like 'overthinking'- then just admit that the new dialouge is 'dumbed down' exposition for idiots that somehow haven't been paying attention.
Lucas trying to serve the same kind of idiots who need to see explicitly that Vader walks to his shuttle, gets on his shuttle, gets off his shuttle, and is now on his star destroyer, or else wouldn't be able to figure out where he is at any given moment in time.

Couldn't agree with you more. I could deal with greedo shooting first, but this dumbed down dialouge is bullshit. It messes with the very continuity of the film.

My biggest problem with this changed scene is how Ian plays the Emperor. Its horrible! I dont know what the hell kinda direction he got from Lucas, but whatever it was... it sucked. He also talks and acts nothing like he did in JEDI.
I think its funny that in Jedi, Vader says "You don't know the power of the Dark Side. I must obey my Master." Yet with the new "How is that possible?" line, Vader just flat-out lies to his goddamn face.

yes, the same actor is now in all the films (meaningless detail), and yet the way key characters behave and react is now inconsistent (spirit).
Lucas is a slave to meanigless detail and ends up losing the spirit of the material in the process.

When I saw the Special Editions (was it 1997?) I said to myself"Oops what's that, Han Solo stepping on Jabba's tail? Oh, Greedo shoots first hmm, oh well I'll just fast forward the parts I don't like". And those two "animations" looked mechanical and rushed.
Now if they keep changing stuff at this rate, my thumb will be sore from fast forwarding every 30 seconds

Well, maybe this is setting us up for a new revelation in ROTJ with his "how is that possible?" line; OBI-WAN is the father!!!!
Guess that means Vader wasn't gettin none while he was with Ms. Padme afterall.

Shit. That sucked. Dammit, now I'm pissed. I can't believe that Lucas is so surrounded by yes-men that someone wouldn't pull him aside and say, "Hey. These changes you're making? They are fucking retarded."

V: Yes, my master.

V: He’s just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.
E: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.
V: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.
E: Yes. (coming to realization) Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
V: He will join us or die, my Master.

With the new dialogue, it's like Lucas trying to explain everything so that the kids who were aged 7or 8 when "Phantom" came out will go "Ahhh, NOW I understand!!!"
*Sigh*
