I also agree, I was amazed how bad the acting was in the movie. Cary Elwes alone dropped this movie from an average movie to a bad one. The ending was the only thing that did anything for me on this one and even that wasn't much.

Blair Witch's poster had the tagline "SCARY AS HELL" from the Rolling Stone review. Now, if you found Blair Witch 'scary as hell', then maybe you'll like saw. I found it boring as hell. The acting is really terrible among the two male leads (Especially Cary Elwes, surprisingly). I went with 5 other people, and they all had the same reaction.

I've noticed that on sites such as Bloody-Disgusting.com they are saying it's the most terrifying and freaky movie in years. Um....It's got a few nifty ideas in it for killing people, yeah, i'll give it that. But other than those scenes, I was really let down.
well that's just YOUR opinion.
i thought blair witch was horrible and saw was good. can't please everyone you know. especially with all these guys on dvdtalk that have such great taste in movies. i was just kidding about that last part.
i don't watch movies based on "critics" reviews, or reviews from friends. so far everyone in this thread has said they hated the movie. is that because you don't want to get flamed? i'm pretty sure there were many people who enjoyed it.

I just watched this movie the other day for the first time and I liked it alot.
I agree that Elwes really sucked. He gave a Keanu Reeves-like perf, complete with some laughable deliveries. But I liked the story and the direction. It had a real '80's low budget horror feel to it. But also a gritty, real side. I really enjoyed it despite Elwes' dumpy turn.

It was decent. I have to agree with one reviewer who said that he was eager for much of the film to return to the room where the two characters are imprisoned. The rest of the film was a bit insipid, but those parts were brilliant. And don't tell me you predicted that ending

Just watched, and like it.

I didn't have any problems with Ewles' performance. The woman who played his wife wasn't that good. But there's not many women out there who can really pull off terrific horror performances.

I could have done without the three or four flashback montages. They really felt like they 'dumbed down' everything, just when I was busy guessing and assembling for myself.

The 'car chase' was edited together badly. Though this is one of the FIRST MOVIES that has used the hyper-time-lapse-thing to their advantage.

The only weak scenes were the mother/daughter ones.

Spoiler:
Unfortunately, I read a very small spoiler about the end. So I was waiting for it. I saw the twist of the orderly's role. ALSO, I saw the twist of who the actual killer was. I almost wish it was 'just some guy'. After those Ahsley Judd movies, it just seems to common that it's "some guy that you remember from that little scene".

I would have preferred to sell a little bit more resolve at the end. I would have liked to see the killer at least running up behind Ewels. But I was more than satisfied with that last, desperate, shot of him closing the door on Adam.

It held my attention throughout. The twists were fun. I kept guessing through the whole thing. Not sure if I'll ever watch it again, though.

HUGE props to the last shot. I loved it!

Negative Neds here...

I thought Saw was the best American "scary movie" from last year and extremely good considering its low budget. If there were better movies from last year, please let me know. I'd love to see them.

Dead Birds was way better than Saw and had a much lower budget.

It does leave you wondering if
Spoiler:
Cary Elwes' character did indeed get away or if cancer guy got him.

The sequel gets under way later this year so I wonder if it will be more of the same or not.
Spoiler:
Actually, if cancer guy is terminal, how many sequels could they make? Granted, someone else could take over but that would just be damn lame.

SAW it the other night, and I really liked it. (For what it was) Cary was scary though...What was with the makeup?

Blair Witch is about as good as shit on a stick.

Saw was decent, it def had me guessing at times, Cary's performance was a little over the top at times, but I could handle it. I will def check out the sequel

I don't really get the Blair Witch comparisons but I liked Blair Witch and thought it was spooky in parts (although it has been quite some time since I have seen it).

Saw was never scary, spooky or even goose-bump producing. The ways to die were inventive but that is the only positive thing. The sound is pretty good and quite agressive (there...one more positive thing).

The acting is atrocious especially by Cary Elwes. I think it would have been more enjoyable with an unknown actor in his place. It truly is the worst Amercian accent attempt ever by an English actor. Horrible. And I have to agree that the make-up was quite bad. He actually made me laugh quite a bit which is never a good way to keep your focus for a horror film. Did anyone also get the feeling that Danny Glover just seemed lost while filming this movie? He just seems out of it (and not just for his character).

The ending was lame as well. When it was over my wife and I just looked at each other and laughed. (She hated Blair Witch for what it's worth.)

Just curious what you guys thought of this:
Spoiler:
So a guy is given a slow acting poison and just doesn't go to an ER to seek help? What would you do? Also...the killer is obviously a control freak but we are supposed to accept that he just lays there completely still the entire time while another part of his master plan (the situation with the orderly) is going on? And to expect that he never moved a muscle and did this awesome make-up job with the head and everything...it just seemed to stretch my reason. And how long can a terminal man with brain cancer go on? Doesn't this movie stretch over a couple of years?

Just saw it tonight for the first time. I thought the ending totally saved the movie. I was pissed that it was so obvious that
Spoiler:
the orderly was the killer since that was so obvious from his needless scene early on. They really got me with that one.

I have to admit, about halfway through I was openly saying that it sucked, but I thought the end was really good. I actually want to watch it again now.

One question though:

Spoiler:
Was the killer going to let Adam go at the end? I thought he was. He told him that the key was in the bathtub and I think he was going to leave Adam alone until Adam tried to shoot him. Then the killer said something like "most people would be happy just to be alive....but not you" and turned off the lights and closed the door.

BTW, this thread is damn hard to search for.

This is a reply to trelach's post above.
Spoiler:
The key was lost down the plughole during the opening sequence of the movie. So Adam could not have unlocked his chains. How the killer knew the keys would be lost like that, I have no idea. The killer didn't treat Adam as a threat until he thought he would shoot because Adam was chained up and out of range of the killer.
