Umm, Alien Resurrection (runs and hides)

I think I liked this just because it was so outlandish,

the aliens looked sleek and vicious, the diversity of the cast, the extreme gore.

Elm Street 2 and Demons 2 are so damn underrated.
Elm Street 2 is an awful, awful film. Yet, those homosexual undertones make the film what it is: a fantastic unintentional comedy. Demons 2, on the other hand, is actually a pretty decent (much better than The Church). But similar to the first film, the "driving around Italy" scenes serve no purpose (yet again) and are just plain boring.

Die Hard with a Vengance
I like it more than Die Hard 2. The film's third act, through, is a little bit "too much."

Jurassic Park III
Much better than The Lost World, I'm surprised that it didn't make more in the box office ($200 million plus).

I'll agree also on Terminator 3, Bad Boys II, Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, Exorcist III, Back to the Future 2, and some others. But when did Superman 2 become an underrated sequels? I was under the perception that most people (except myself) liked it more than the first one.

I really loved Alien Resurrection up until the 3rd act... then it became a pile of festering shit. Everything leading up to that was genius though.

Rockmjd23 08-13-04 04:53 PM

In addition to many already mentioned, I also liked Friday the 13th part II, Damien: Omen II, Jaws 2, and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2

Shap 08-13-04 04:57 PM

Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

:D

Ok ok, but Major League 2 is funnier than people give it credit for.

Trigger 08-13-04 10:06 PM

good one - major league 2 was good. I always forget that one when this thread comes up.

TheAllPurposeNothing 08-13-04 11:03 PM

Short Circuit 2

Not Hamlet but better than the original flick, has some amusing moments and Fisher Stevens proves to be able to carry a flick.

Conan the Destroyer

I actually like this more than Barbarian, which to me, took itself much too seriously. Cheesy acting, cheesy special effects and a cheesy plot = bad movie? Lot on your knife!

The Great Muppet Caper
The Muppets Take Manhattan
A Muppet Christmas Carol

All great family entertainment. Plus, Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim was inspired. The first time I've ever cried from Scrooge's visit from the ghost of Christmas Future.

necros 08-13-04 11:19 PM

Elm Street 3. I mean, come on, it had a Dokken theme song!!

ruddiger_718 08-14-04 12:58 AM

I am a Troma fan, and would like to add in Citizen Toxie, the 4th of the Toxic Avenger flicks, and the best one yet.

turborobb 08-14-04 01:10 AM

sequels rule!

I always thought Predator 2 was better than the first Predator. The first one was basicly Arnold vs monster in the jungle, Predator 2 had more of a good sci fi story.

SPiRAL 08-14-04 01:31 AM

Wayne's World 2
Austin Powers 2

These were the first two that popped in my head.

shaggy 08-14-04 03:02 AM

I totally agree with

Exorcist 3
Alien 4
Scream 2
Vegas Vaction
Lost World and JP3
Nightmare 3
Creepshow 2 "Thanks for the ride lady"
Jaws 2
Halloween 2

I also really like

Fletch Lives
Scream 3
Wes Cravens New Nightmare
Jason X

tommyp007 08-14-04 11:36 AM

More props for Fletch Lives and the 2nd and 3rd Die Hard Films.

I HAVE to disagree with the Predator 2 mention. I just saw it a week ago and it was hard to sit through, it's really just terrible.

As for underrated sequels, I'd agree with Lethal Weapon 2, Terminator 2, and Scream 2.

I'd also add A Better Tomorrow 3, Dead or Alive 2, Battle Royale 2, The Junkman, Taxi 2, and Final Destination 2.

Matthew Chmiel 08-14-04 12:22 PM

Tarantino, Battle Royale 2? No. ;)

But nice call on The Junkman and Final Destination 2. :)

heavily disagree on t2, many fans (including myself) think its better then 1.

Agree with Halloween 2 and 4. The second one has a lot of negative buzz because of the upped gore, and because of the Samhain/Laurie is Michael's sistersubplots, but otherwise it matches the tone of the original perfectly. And I actually think it's scarier than the first) although this is largely due to overexposure of the original, I admit).

Part 4 is great stuff, IMO. It doesn't match the tone of the first two exactly, it's more of a rebirth to the franchise. But it's the rare rebirth that's done right. It had the potential to carry the franchise is a new direction. Too bad the people behind part 5 ruined any chance of that. :(

I also agree with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, and to a degree part 2. Part 2 has many problems, namely the parakeet scene and the pool party. And sure, the story is a mess and the characters are all unlikable. But it DOES have the same look/feel of the first... the dark look and bizarre random weird shit. And the seedy homoerotic stuff is actually played out cleverly (or accidentally - maybe I'm giving Jack Sholder too much credit) as a representation of a common nightmarish situation for a 'macho' straight male.

Dream Warriors is great, and would have been perfect as the finale to the series. It is responsible for introducing elements that would eventually be the downfall of the franchise. It really brings Freddy out into the light (much more so than part 2, which is usually blamed for introducing this unwelcome change), it begins the one-liners, and it is the first to add a mythic quality to Freddy's backstory (expanding on-and somewhat glossing over-the more realistic and unsettling backstory from the first). But in these small doses these things weren't too bad. 4, 5, and 6 are the films that overused these elements and beat them into the ground.

Scream 2: When released back in 1997, the film was praised by most critics citing it as a better film than the first. The audience tend to disagree. I think Scream 2 is a much better film than Scream (two films I highly enjoy). It's too bad that Scream 3 was a piece of shit.
I'd argue more critics liked the first Scream, but I do remember a handful of critics liking the second more. I agree the second is underrated but it doesn't exceed the first.

The few negative reviews I've read about Scream usually say the self-referential angle doesn't work, but that is where I believe most of the humor is derived from, yet is still clever enough to not insult the audience.

I also went over to rottentomatoes.com for the heck of it and saw the unofficial tomatometer shows:

Scream - 57 fresh, 7 rotten, 7.7/10
Scream 2 - 63 fresh, 25 rotten, 6.8/10

It would be hard to get a feel for those that like one more than the other, that is if they like both films to begin with, unless you look at both reviews from each reviewer or they say it outright.

:)

Battle Royale 2 IMO is embarrasingly bad compared to the brilliant original, the acting is over the top or in some cases just plain awful. The costumes are bad, they made every one looking like they were auditioning for the Japanese version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Cats". It's far to long, it needed editing massively,

As great as the original? Hardly. But as solid of a "true" sci-fi flick as any released in the '80s.

nemein 08-15-04 08:45 AM

 For those that said Alien3 and Predator 2

Regarding Starship Troopers 2 quite frankly I thought the commentary was better than the dialog itself. A good effort given the amount of money they had to spend though.

Some others that come to mind;
Project A2, Operation Condor and Police Story 2 (all Jackie Chan movies)
Sniper 2 (kind of looking forward to #3 but I'm not getting my hopes up ;))
F/X2
Tremors 4 (2&3 suck but I found 4 to be enjoyable/recaptured some of the feeling of the original)
Gremlins 2 was better than the 1st IMHO but I don't think that qualifies as one that is "underrated" ;)
