Necessary to see Blade before Blade 2?
I really enjoy Guillermo Del Toro’s films and want to watch Blade 2. I’m just wondering if these two films are self-contained or should I watch Blade prior to Blade 2?

I have to ask why there is such an influx of questions like these "Do I have to see part 1 to see part 2?"
Generally yes. It would be wise that in order to get to 2 you should see the first. One sets up a character and the other expands on it. Miss something and you could be lost. 2 hours of your time to set up the film is not much time.

Save Blade to watch after the sequel, then you will have seen the better one last, less of a bad taste in your mouth.

It would be best to watch them both but if you are tight on time you can skip the first.

I would wtach them both, but it doesn't matter which you see first, really. There's a God-awful "Hi, I'm Blade, lemme bring you up to speed as to what I am and what I've been up to" voice-over during the credits of Blade 2. So, if all you needed to know was who he was, then you don't need to see the first one.
However, I would watch the first one, well, first. Gives you a rich sense of who Blade is.

FWIW, I loved Blade but really disliked Blade II. It had a few decent moments, and some great concepts, but I was largely bored by the whole thing. Plus where the first movie sets up this unique vampire world that actually seems like something that could exist in the real world, the sequel just felt too stylized for my tastes.
Lastly, I loved the horror aspect of the original and was sorry this was downplayed a bit in the sequel in favor of a more straightforward action approach.
