I know it is gritty and not your typical family affair for summer, but I think Tom, Jaime and especially Michael deserves better. I really thought this would do better, not that it has done badly by any means, but considering summer is all. I know "Heat" wasn't a blockbuster and really gained more noteriety on DVD, but considering that and the reflections this brings to "Collateral" and the very decent reviews, I would have thought it would propel it well over $30 mil. Guess not.

Also, can we consider "Catwoman" a major bomb now?

I don't know either there Scott, but I can tell you one thing.................Tom Cruise is the reason why I haven't seen this flick yet, it's tough for me to sit through his acting.

Collateral is going to have legs, very long and strong legs.

Open Water also did well with a theater count of only 47, bringing in $1,035,000 and being #16 on the list this weekend. It averaged $22,021, and compared to the top two on this list (Collateral averaged $7,653 and The Village $4,442), that's great.

Tom Cruise movies have never been known for opening massively. His films usually perform with good word of mouth. Remember this is an adult thriller, not your average summer blockbuster.

In fact, this opening is right on par with a lot of other R rated Tom Cruise movies. Last Samurai, Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut, they all opened right around here. With good reviews I imagine this should still hold on pretty well (not to mention it's only a 60 million dollar movie).

I had my doubts about him being able to pull this off in a believable way (I thought he'd be too distracting in the role), but I was blown away by his performance (and even more so by Foxx's). Don't let your skepticism or dislike of Tom Cruise prevent you from seeing it.

I really didn't see a whole lot of advertising for Collateral, so i'm not surprised at its opening. Hopefully it will have long legs from the reviews and word of mouth.

The 5 people with me in my Friday morning showing of Collateral pretty much told me that this movie wasn't going to have a "blockbuster" opening weekend. I actually thought more around $15m, so I'm glad to see it's doing well. Best movie of the summer.

it had almost a 90% at RT. i thought that would help it, but it's R. had it been PG-13 it would have done AT LEAST $35 million for the weekend.

but i'm glad they didn't water it down

plus if Mike Mann had made a few minor changes in the second half (We all know how outrageous it was) people wouldn't have laughed near the end when they were not supposed to.

No excuse for this Terminator crap from Mann. None.

The film was beyond great. A little let down on how much it did. Great word of mouth (awsome reviews) will make this have some very nice legs. Especially next week when Alien Vs Predator is the only real competition coming out. Village should be out of the picture as a real threat with it's drop % and it will shine for just a little more.

And even that "low" number is split between two studios.

These are good numbers on COLLATERAL, people. Make no mistake.

We'll see if it really has legs, as few movies these days do. Even movies that get good reviews and have good word of mouth. On the other hand, there's not a whole lot coming out in the next few weeks that will directly compete with Collateral. As has been mentioned, the movie should end up doing fine financially though.

at Catwoman.

Also, Collateral and other rated R movies tend to do well on weeknights as opposed to teen fodder which only does real business on weekends.

still second though, I was suprised at that.

Honestly, $25M for Collateral is quite good. It's an 'R' movie and hasn't really been marketed as a Tom Cruise movie in the traditional sense.

I can't imagine seeing a better movie this year. You should do yourself a favor and get over it.

With the number of people I told NOT to go see this bomb, I'm not surprised it went down so much in its second week.

Not really surprised. It just doesn't seem to have a rewachability factor that other movies have. While people might see Spiderman twice, once they've seen the villiage, there isn't a lot to get them to see it again. I found myself getting bored with parts of it. While I did like the movie, I can't see myself ever wanting to see it again.

I guess green is the "bad color".

See what I did there? MONEY is GREEN!

That's a pretty big drop for "The Village". I think Signs dropped about 50% from weekend 1 to 2.
