Flash Gordon - remake
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...804/va_fi_ne/u
U, Sommers teaming for big dash of 'Flash' Tue Aug 3, 9:19 PM ET Claude Brodesser, STAFF "Van Helsing" writer-director Stephen Sommers and his producing partner Bob Ducsay have landed the rights to Flash Gordon, and will adapt a feature film based on the iconic comic book superhero for Universal. Sommers, creator of such hits as "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," is producing the Flash project with an eye toward scripting; Sommers has yet to helm a project he hasn't scripted. "Flash Gordon" dates back to 1934, when it was created by famed comic strip artist Alex Raymond, and for decades after appeared in movie serials, animated fare, TV shows and a 1980 feature helmed by Mike Hodges ("Croupier"). Property is controlled by the Hearst Corp.'s King Features Syndicate, and its liaison to Hollywood, Rick Karo, will produce along with Sommers and Ducsay. Deal also packs good news for classic comics fans, as the legendary intergalactic adventurer, his female companion Dale Arden and scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov will again appear in comic books. This time, the series will be distribbed by the nation's third largest comic book company, Top Cow, whose film topper Spike Selden will exec produce with former Davis Entertainment exec Adam Coplan. Sommers is expected to serve as a creative consultant on the new series of comic books, according to insiders. The 1980 "Flash Gordon" pic, produced by Dino De Laurentiis and starring Max von Sydow as Flash Gordon nemesis Ming the Merciless, was also released by U. The Sommers Co., which has a first-look term deal with U, recently optioned the rights to Sarah Dunn's romantic adventure novel "The Big Love." However, that pic is something Sommers is interested in producing only, at least as of now. Since opening last May, U's $200 million-budgeted Sommers tentpole "Van Helsing" has grossed $269 million worldwide and is expected to narrowly break even for the studio. "Flash's" progress to production will be overseen by U vice chairman Scott Stuber and VP of production Dylan Clark. ______________ I have the script to a Flash Gordon movie Universal tried to launch back in 1995. It was interesting to say the least, but with Sommers in charge. I'm not too thrilled about this. |
Cool. As much as I like to see a new flash, it wont be the same without Queen...
Need 2 disc 1980 version now!!!! |
Ack!
|
I may regret admitting this, but Deep Rising is one of my favorite B-movies, and I liked The Mummy quite a bit. Although his latest efforts have been pretty bad I still have hope.
They have to at least work the Queen theme song in somewhere. FLASH! Ah-a-aaah! |
I'm sure we'll hear a lot of Sommers bashing, but it sounds good to me. Was dissapointed by Van Helsing but it was still entertaining, as was both Mummy movies.
|
This just might be the type of movie that Stephen Sommers could excel with. Give him a decent script and a sizable budget and I have faith he could turn out a really good Flash Gordon movie. Then again, so could most directors...
|
No one better to direct something as cheesy and as campy as 'ol Flash.

I never understood the need to remake movies that were perfect in the first place.
;) Only half-joking. Flash is pretty much my favorite "super-cheese" movie of all time. :) |
"GO FLASH GO!!!! GO FLASH GO!!!! GO FLASH GO!!!! GO FLASH GO!!!"
|
Oh well - that could have been a good movie too (or at least a fun movie - the 1980 version was no great work of art, but it was camp fun).
And no - this isnt unfounded bashing. One good movie and a TON of shit ones is not unfounded bashing. It's an educated guess. |
Guess this movie will suck too!
|
Diiiiiiive!!!
|
|
This is a match made in heaven!
|
Buster Crabbe! I remember those B & W serials.

Though it's true Sommers will PROBABLY direct, he hasn't committed to directing... he's writing and producing, but he hasn't said wether he'd direct it or not at this point.

Van Helsing cost $200 million? I thought it was more in the neighborhood of $150 million. Oh well.
If Sommers keeps himself in the mold of the two mummy movies and the first half of Van Helsing, it could be very decent. I just can't picture a Flash Gordon movie without the Queen music blaring though. IMO, the 1980 version is one in which the music MADE the movie. Without it, the film would have truly been lackluster (not that it wasn't already, the music raised it about 75%). |
Why not remake "Flash Gordon"?
I was just watching this and while not a good movie in many respects, it has a good, almost epic story line that I think with today's technology and special effects could be made into something spectacular.
I mean a space adventure with a human saving the earth from a variety of alien races and one supreme dictator. A story like that screams to be retold in grand form. So why hasn't someone jumped? |
I think Kerry Conran wanted to do it.
|
Flash! Aaaahaaa!
I remember was that theme song. |

Well, according to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421201/, Stephen Sommers of The Mummy and Van Helsing fame is writing and directing a remake. Prepare for CGI abuse.
|
There was a script making the rounds about 10 years ago. I never got around to reading it but I still have it.
|
Kerry Conran would be an excellent choice. I loved Sky Captain and can't believe that it did so badly at the box office. But i remember last hearing about Flash Gordon with Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Mummy Returns, Van Helsing) wanting to direct. It was just after Van Helsing. I guess that movie didn't bring in the numbers and so they didn't go ahead with Flash. I would like to see a new version of Flash Gordon. I like the original 80s flick and also the Buster Grabbe serials so would like to see a remake. It would have to star Brain Blessed....."GORDON's ALIVE!!!!!"
|
Aside from being "camp," I quite enjoyed the 1980 version. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Flash Gordon is what George Lucas originally was interested in making a movie of, but when he realized he'd never get the rights to it, he went off and created Star Wars.
I think Sommers is a better choice. While I loved the "look" of Sky Captain, the storytelling and pacing nearly put me to sleep...that movie was a "snoozer". :) |
How about "Why not give us a good Region 1 SE version of the 1980 film?" I'd love to have that. I have no interest in seeing it remade at this point.
|
Brett Favre as Flash Gordon
|
I really like the 1980 version (and the R2 DVD is terrific) but this is an instance where I wouldn't object to a decent remake (so that should eliminate any participation by Sommers).
|
If they can find some way to use parts of the Queen score, I'm all for it. If not, who cares? That music is what made the movie what it was in my mind, and without it the movie loses a lot of its adrenaline.
|
I don't think Sommers or Conran should do it. With Sommers you may have a decent action story but the CGI will look horrible, with Conran you'll have a pretty movie that won't be worth watching after 30 seconds. Perhaps they should combine forces.
|
A good remake of this would be awesome. Frankly, I'd also be up for a remake of Flesh Gordon, which in many ways captured the feel of the serials better than the 1980 version (sans the T&A, of course).
|
I actually enjoyed Sky Captain....anyway moving on, a remake of Flash Gordan is over due, they doing it for everything else these days.

No remake. They should just do a new version of it, a new "reimagining" if you will.

re: Flash Gordon - remake
Matthew Vaughn in Talks to Direct 'Flash Gordon' (Exclusive) John Davis and George Nolfi are producing the film based on the comic strip hero created by Alex Raymond. Matthew Vaughn, savior of the universe? Vaughn, basking in the success of his surprise hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, is in negotiations to direct Flash Gordon, a movie based on the classic comic strip character that is set up at Twentieth Century Fox. The studio picked up the project almost a year ago, with John Davis and King Features producing. Davis spent more than a year acquiring the rights from the Hearst Corporation. Gordon is the adventurer first created in 1934 by iconic artist Alex Raymond. The hero, along with the lovely Dale Arden and mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, ends up on the planet Mongo fighting its tyrannical ruler, Ming the Merciless. The strip was a major influence on pop culture, spawning three Buster Crabbe serials and, of course, the cheesy 1980 movie best known for its soundtrack by Queen. One of the character's lasting effects was in shaping the mind of a young George Lucas, who paid homage to the Gordon serials with Star Wars. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) wrote the script, working off a treatment by Nolfi. Vaughn, who’s always shown an affinity for geek-friendly material with his poppy comic book movies Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, became highly sought by numerous studios after Kingsman. The movie, based on a Mark Millar-written comic, was released in February and has grossed more than $392 million worldwide on a reported budget of $81 million. He is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham. |

If they don't re-use the Queen songs/score, fuck this reboot!
