"Clerks"...what a damn good movie thread!
Just saw this in its entirety for the first time last night. I got to say I was surprised. I tried it many, many moons back and dismissed it. I think back then I didn't really understand these type of movies or rather didn't give them the time they deserved simply because, good ones with witty banter and little to nothing more.
Well, I saw this was on IFC and no Yankees so gave it a ride. And what a fun, little ride from the aspiring Kevin Smith. I have seen most of his others since except "Mallrats" and they were all ok, with "Chasing Amy" the notable excellent exception.
But, really got into the great dialogue and interactions. They all seemed genuine and loosely based on real customers, situations etc. Really good and really fun.
Fav scene:
Great stuff!
So what happened to the two leads, Randall and Dante? How come they haven't been more prominently featured in Kevin Smith's others? I know they were in some, but he usually sticks close to the same cast and they seem vacant, like they fell off the earth when Mewes, Lee, Affleck, Lauren Adams have prospered. I dunno.
So what are others thoughts on this cult fav...

Answers to your questions can be found at the www.viewaskew.com website. There is a nice FAQ there, that should cover your questions.
Brian O'Halloran (Dante) has been in every View Askew universe film (the big 5). Jersey Girl was the first Smith film he hasn't been in.
Jeff Anderson (Randall) is a slightly different story. Depending on what story you read, and how you interpret it, Kevin and Jeff had a bit of a falling out after Clerks. After reading the threads around that time, my interpretation was Jeff got a big head and was being a jerk. Anyways, they patched it up, and you can see him in Dogma and J&SBSB.
My fav scene:
I'm off to go rent "Happy Scrappy Hero Pup".

Although I still enjoy Smith early movies, I would hardly call his dialogue genuine.

While we're talking about this movie, I just have one question.
Kevin Smith really "got me" in one scene.
Remember when Dante's ex, Caitlin, comes out of the bathroom and thought she had sex with him. She says that he just sat there and didn't say anything...
Did anyone else expect Silent Bob to come walking out the bathroom?
I seriously wasn't expecting what actually happened.

Excellent movie, I saw this at the theater when it first came out in '94.
I saw maybe 5 minutes of it last night on IFC but had to turn it off because our kids were listening.
Dante: You ever notice how all the prices end in nine? Damn, that's eerie...
Dante: My girlfriend's sucked 37 [censored]! Customer: In a row?
Female customer: It's important to have a job that makes a difference, boys, that's why I manually masturbate caged animals for artificial insemination.

favorite scene is where a female customer is bickering with randal in the video store, and you can see jay in the background.

I love how Kevin Smith movie threads always turn into everyone just posting lines, like with Mallrats That said, Clerks is my least favorite of his movies. Nothing special to me outside of some witty dialogue and screwing a dead guy

I worked in retail for 4 years of high school and 8 (yes I said 8) years of college. We all hated the customers...
