This is the only Kevin Smith movie to actually hold up after the test of time. I'm not really into his other View-Askewniverse films as much, but I still love this movie. Anyone who has worked a similar job can relate to everything that Dante and Randal go through. Some of the best dialogue of the 90's is also in this film.

Simpler is better, at least in the case of Messr. Smith's films. Clerks is a masterpiece of low budget cinema, and far superior to his later, better-financed work (except perhaps Chasing Amy, though it has its own cringeworthy moments). I, too, look forward to double-dipping on this.

I have to bump this.
I watched this for the first time today. A co-worker of mine said I just "had" to rent Clerks this weekend. Luckily for me it was on Starz. I have to admit it was pretty funny. I guess working at Wal-Mart in highschool helped me relate...somewhat. I can't imagine the shit you see or have to deal with on a daily basis at a convenience store.

"This job would be great if it weren't for the f'ing customers." Pretty much the mantra of my employment career.
Like it or hate it, it's probably one of the most quotable movies ever made.

I've been nagging my neighbor for the longest time to borrow my copy and watch it. I let her borrow my Clerks X set and instructed her to only watch the theatrical version. She really enjoyed it and came over right after to view the picture of my trip to the actual store.
I'd really love to go back out there and check it out again.

My favorite Smith movie, by a huge margin. Mallrats and Dogma were fun, but the rest are pretty forgettable in my book (though I need to give Chasing Amy another whirl, which after my first viewing a few years back ended up somewhere near the top of my "worst movies ever" list).

I can't believe I have never seen this thread before.
Here's my Clerks story...
In 1993 I used to manage a video store called Saturday Matinee in the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, NJ. A guy comes in and we start talking about movies. He tells me he was just in a film and asks if I want to see it. I said sure as I am a big movie fan, at that time I already had a collection of over 3,000 movies on tape.
So he brings the tape in and it's Clerks. I still have the tape with his business card attached. I pop it in and see that it's black & white. I pop it out figuring it's probably some crappy movie that this guy & his friends made. I don't think about it again until MTV is showing scenes of Woodstock 94 and they say that the movie Clerks is being shown. I remember that I have the movie so I sit down an watch it. Now this is the original cut with different music and the original ending where _ _ _ _ _ gets _ _ _ _ _ _. (I don't know how to use spoilers and didn't want to ruin it for anyone who doesn't know how the original ended.)
Needless to say I loved it and made all my friend come over and watch it. We must have watched it 100 times over the next 2 years.
When Clerks came out on video I got an advance screener and watched both movies side by side to see what was different. I wrote it all down but I have no idea where it is now.
Does anyone know as site that lists the difference in the original and the home video release?
The guy who gave me the movie was the guy who played the gum salesman, Scott Schiaffo.

Both versions are on the Clerks X DVD if you are interested.
(Sorry, just realized that I didn't answer your question... heh heh. I guess you can watch the DVD and figure it out yourself)
Cool story, by the way.

I guess the version I have would be the one they showed at Sundance. I pulled it out and the business card says
Scott Henry Shciaffo
Guitar/Keyboards,
Live Studio Lessons, All styles of music.
It also has his phone number but I'm not going to post that.
I have the Clerks X DVD but I haven't had time to compare the different versions to each other or to the tape I have. If I have time I check them all out and see what the differences are.
