I always thought Christophern Reeves made a crappy Clark Kent. He looked like Superman with glasses. When George Reeves was Clark it looked like another person. Of course the hat helped ;-P

The best part of the original Superman movie was the Mario Puzo screen play, Young clark, Glenn Ford and Gene Hackman

Wow. Talk about the minority vote. To each their own but this is the very first time someone's mentioned Chris Reeve as NOT the best thing about Supes. He's usually the first with Donner's direction coming in second and Williams' music third. I have serious doubts you're serious. Oh, as for the Mario Puzo screenplay, it's been pretty well documented that "Creative Consultant" Tom Mankiewicz(sp?) pretty much re-wrote the whole thing from the ground up.

Yeah, Puzo's original script was much campier, it's always seemed to me that Lex Luthor is one of the most obvious remnants from Puzo's script.

I believe the second rewrite after Puzo was the campy one.

Scott is correct. The original David and Leslie Newman re-write of Puzo's massive script (300 pages, originally, I believe) was pretty campy. It had references to Kojak (with Telly Savalas offering a lollipop and saying, "Who loves ya baby?" --- I kid you not!), Otis "flushing" himself down a commode to get to Luthor's lair, and other ridiculous elements. (Just witness the mess that which is SUPERMAN III to see how bad the script can get.)

Creative Consultant Tom Mankiewicz really deserves a lot of credit, along with the director Richard Donner, for keeping the SUPERMAN legend respected and respectable.

Reeve as Superman was as good as it gets, and as I recall they had him contracted to do several Superman movies, ala' James Bond movies in those days. He looked and portayed the role wonderfully; he also did Somewhere In Time a few years after this and it's one of my favorite movies as well. It's great to see so many of the movies' boosters give their praise here.
I remember going to see this at the theatre and it was AWESOME to watch. While I'm a huge Hackman fan, I didn't feel that he was quite so sinister as the comics up to that time portrayed Luthor as being. Thats a quibble, and it doesn't deter me from loving this movie at all. The first movie is my favorite, and the second movie is great as well. If they had kept writing some great scripts this series colud have gone on for awhile.......III and IV are worlds beneath the first two. Having said that, they still had the great cast intact and could have done plenty with good stories....but putting the first and second movies together alone on the pedestal- they're both benchmarks for the genre.

Well whether Jake would have done better in Spiderman or not, I guess the whole Jake/Kirsten chemistry thing is out the window. They're a couple no more. Thankfully, they're sticking with the same lead actor. I hope they manage to get it right with the new Superman franchise and pick someone that will last.
