Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)... hmmm.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/

I just found that after looking up Martin Freeman (Tim from "The Office"). He's playing Arthur Dent, which is a role he was born to play.

Mos Def as Ford Prefect?

Bill Nighy as Slartibartifast?

Both great choices.

Directed by the guy who apparently did some Ali G stuff (hilarious show) and Blur's video with the dancing milk carton (one of my favorites).

This might be promising.

I'm not sure about the Mos Def choice, but it'd be great to see another Hitchhiker movie. I didn't think the Made-For-Tv one from awhile back was very good.

I haven't read any of the Hitchhiker books, but Mos Def is a fine actor with a lot of charisma. This film looks interesting.

Being a pretty big Hitchhiker fan, I've been following this movie for a while. Even though it's still a year away, I can't wait to see the results.

Now I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I read this awhile back on some other message forum and people were really enthusiastic with the casting. I knew a few of the actors but the lead was met by a 'huh? who?' from me at the time. Now I get what they were excited about. Yeah, great casting!

Is that Marvin? Marvin better not be CGI. As well - in a way I find difficult to fully articulate - I think that giving Zaphod TWO heads via digial compositing is going to look strange and unreal; much stranger, in fact, than the fake rubber head from the BBC miniseries. Something about the power of the suspension of disbelief being a stronger thing than a literal visualization of the utterly fantastic.

Apart from the guy playing Arthur being a little flat, I still think the BBC miniseries is wonderful, funny, and charming - especially the narrated, animated book sequences. It's going to be tough to improve on in a two hour movie.

Marvin is being played by the guy who played Willow (You are great!) Malkovich is in it as well as a character Adams created just for the movie.

Martin Freeman's blog:

Good interview with the director:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mjs2000/nickgarth1.htm

They've already shot the first 15 minutes, so I guess it's truly a go.

Also, I forgot to mention Sam Rockwell is playing Zaphod, another great choice.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Official Website + Teaser are up. Because it's never too early to get the hype machines rolling...
http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/

Before you get too excited though, there's no actual footage shown. It's cool how they used the same song in the trailer that they used to close out the HHGttG BBC Miniseries though. Other than that, not much to see, but I did set the "Don't Panic" wallpaper as my background though.

IU love Mos Def as a rapper.

Think he';s mediocre as a singer.

Think he's a bad actor.

I hope he proves me wrong. I love THGTG too much not to see it.

But I'd prefer Don Cheadle over Mos Def.

I saw the trailer and they almost ripped off Titan A.E. from the looks of it, right down to the tagline. "When Earth ends, the journey begins."

I love Mos Def as an MC.
I love Mos Def as a singer.
I like the movies that he's been in.
I am excited to see the movie.

STEAMROLLED, huh? Everything will get steamrolled. But I doubt it's going to hurt any of the other movies. They'll go on making their standard 30mil etc., and Star Wars will make it's standard 120mil the first five days. And there's going to be plenty of sold out shows to Star Wars. I only see Star Wars HELPING movies released on the same day.

Or hurting other movies. We've all read posts by people who won't go near a theater for a week or so because it will be so crowded and they can't handle crowds.

Hitchhiker's Guide actually comes out two weeks before Star Wars (that comes out on the 19th), so that should give it plenty of time. I don't care if other people don't want to see it though, I just want it to be a good movie so that I'll want to go see it.

People said the same thing when THE MUMMY came out just a few weeks before PHANTOM MENACE. If it's a good movie, there will be plenty of people paying to see it...don't worry.

You do realize that this was originally a radio series, well over 25 years ago?

And you, of course, realize that tagline was never applied to the Radio/Television/Book series, right?

It's a fair comment by resinrats, the trailer was a little A.E.ish.

No kidding. The spot two weeks prior to memorial day has been since 1996 a huge day for movies. If anything it's the real start of the summer ovie season, so competition from Star Wars is not really too much a concern for this movie. Whether people will want to see it is its issue, but its got a great opening date.

I saw the trailer in a theater for this over the weekend. I wasn't aware that the movie was being made, so it was a surprise. When I saw the earth exploding ... I wondered "is this HG2tG?" and sure enough "DON'T PANIC" came up and I knew it was. I was a big fan of the books and the low low budget TV series as well, so I will have to check this out.

Am I the only one who thinks that the logo looks like a stylized rooster's head? Looking up to the left at 10 o'clock or so?

I realize now it's supposed to be a three fingered - one thumbed hitchhiking hand, but for the life of me I couldn't make the connection when I first saw it.
