I just rented Amelie for the first time and watched the film twice. I loved it and cannot wait to watch it again. Audrey Tautou, who reminded me of Audrey Hepburn which isn't a bad thing, played Amelie with such sweetness and even with a little bit sinster in her as well made her such an interesting character, and I found the character incredibley likeable and she's not too bad on the eyes either...anyways I just had to share as to why I'm now looking forward to this film very much so especially with the same director and of course Audrey.

Really have no comments other than I want to see this.
That and can't shake a slight Big Fish feel from it, but that's a good thing. Here's to hoping it goes wide shortly after the Nov 26th limited release date.

I saw this tonight, and it was beautiful, extremely well shot, and so picturesque...
The story was excellent, the footage of the trenches in WW1 were excellent, it gave you quite the sense of being there.
and yes Jodie speaks excellent French in the film.

Saw this film a few days ago, really great. One thing my friend and I noticed is that Jeunet's films are almost easier to watch on a small screen in that there's so much visual stimulation going on, it overwhelms you. Not that this is a bad thing. I suppose the only real criticism of the film is its not quite as emotional as you expect it to be. Not that I want the film to be sappy, but theres a bit of an air of detachment to it. I was impressed that the war scenes were suitably graphic. I wasn't sure if the usual whimsey of Jeunet would translate well to this type of story (although there definately are a number of moments or characters that are similar to the humor in previous films).
I had no idea going in that Jodie Foster was in this film. It was a small part, but her sequence I think was one of the more memorable (and despite what I said before, emotional) parts of the film. Highly recommended.

Saw this a week ago and loved it. Someone else wrote that they didn't want a 'sappy' film/ending, but I couldn't agree less. When I went to see Garden State, I believe that I would have been pissed if the film ended on a sad note. Everyone wrote that they thought the ending of that film was cliched, but I felt it was perfect because it was sappy. That is what I wanted from the end of A Very Long Engagement. Without giving away any spoilers, the ending was terribly original and something that did not expect AT ALL, but I wanted something different and more rewarding...especially for Matilde.
That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy every moment in the theater. The look and feel of the film was exactly what I was expecting and wanting, with TONS of exciting surprises, assorted characters, and all that extra backstory that is always so great.
Tons of characters though, and a lot of dialogue that kept my mind working overdrive for 2 1/2 hours. The film surely warrents multiple viewings to suck it all in. Catch it if you can. Ransom
