What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

When signing up, put down DVDTalk_dtcarson in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

3. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

4. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

5. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Remember, new players: add this week's "Bottom Feeder" (DVDTalk_dtcarson) as your referral when signing up!

I added a new section to the leaderboard: "Best Performance." This features the players with the top three highest Week-to-Date percentages.

Good idea Groucho.

Wow looks like we were wrong about Shrek 3 hovering in the low 100's, its all the way up to 137 today .

Do you think maybe its time for the mods to consider making this game a permanent sticky?

This is frusterating. I was up about 90K yesterday (my best so far), and now I'm down about 26K today. It all comes and goes so easily.

I don't understand why bwsh2 is dropping so much when the movie has allready made more than the option is currently priced at.

Unless I'm missing something.

It doesn't cash out until September. People generally don't want to leave security languishing in their portfolio for margainal gain when they can sell it and use the money on higher yield choices (such as SHRK3).

Ditto--bwsh2 isn't going to be a make-it-rich thing, but you'll currently make about 20% on it if you hold it till Labor Day [if I understand warrants right]. Current gross minus Strike price is currently > than current stock price, so it's a sure thing, as far as I can tell. The gross is going to go nowhere but up, after all.

Groucho--that's a good point. I guess I'm doing so poorly, I've got a decent chunk in bwsh2, I know it'll make money, I'll leave it, and play around with what little else I have, since I'm batting about .050 with my investments so far [no, not .500].

And Vonner--you're half right. In my case, it *goes* so easily.

I'm still trying to figure a strategy. I'm about to the point where, if I'm going to be online for a while, put a bunch of money in one thing that looks like its going up [or short something going down], run that real-time tracker program in the other thread, then as soon as it goes up a certain percentage [even something like 5%], cash out--right now I need to play somewhat conservatively to even get to where I started from financially.

I can't recall if you've tried this or not, but did you click on "Account History" and try to figure out where the money went?

Slowly gaining. I hope to be in the top 10 soon. For three weeks I was sitting on stocks that I'm sure will eventually explode--but I didn't feel like waiting for that to happen.

My tip of the thread

This is a stock that I think will make money. Is this a guarantee- no.

It is just a stock that I think that over time will delist for more money than it is selling for now.

SAVED

It is a limited release stock which means it has to stay below 650 screens or it will go wide.

If it stays limited:

It has 12 weeks before it delists.

week 1: $582,066 completed
week 2: $600,296 completed
week 3: $3,715,406 one day left which I estimated at $372,496

so with 3 weeks down it should end up with around $4,897,998.

Then will have 9 more weeks left to make money.

I am going to use a reduction week to week of 10%, 20%,30%... drop off. It has been less so far although this could change.

week 4: $3,343,865
week 5: $2,675,092
week 6: $1,872,564
week 7: $1,123,538
week 8: $561,769
week 9: $224,707
week 10:$67,412
week 11:$13,482
week 12:$2,700

$14,580,897

These are very conservative numbers IMO based on how it has been acting.

I think it will really cashout at around $16-20.

If it goes wide in another week.

It gets previous B.O. plus 2.9x first weekend adjust.

After this week it should be at around $8.2 million plus by adding theaters it should hold week 4's B.O. without dropping at the least.

So adjust would be $8.2 + 2.9x$3,343,865= $17,897,208.

So at the current level of $10.90 you should be able to make some real money on this over time.

Plus it is easy for a small port to buy 50,000 shares since the buy in is only $545,000

I want to be real up front. I bought this and am holding it LONG myself and played the numbers this way to decide to purchase it.

If you think this is not helpful. I will delete this and never do it again

As always I could be an idiot and my numbers are just guesses so I could be real wrong on this stock. So you could lose some money if you decide to buy.

Link to current numbers.

I've gone through it and I can't find a missing $800,000 anywhere. Maybe if someone smarter than me wants to give it a look, I could send my history to them.

feel free to email it to me at [email protected]

I will see if I can find it for you

By the way you can feel free to edit out stock names since I do not need to know what you bought.

Ok I get that you should have

$2,889,300.16 plus whatever profit you have for the day plus whatever survey money or referral money you got.

does this add up to your total?

I emailed a quick excel sheet I did just to add everything up

you start at 2 million.

what survey's have you done?

have you won any money from netflixs or civilian?

have you gotten any referrals?

this would all be added to the figure I gave you.

also any profits for the day.

I emailed the spreadsheet so you can check the entries.

The last entry is the 2 million start up.
