Anyone liked the Emperor's Club with Kevin Kline?

I can't find one person who has seen it.

I thought it was underrated and Kline gave an excellent performance.

It was not a Dead Poets Society knockoff as everyone claims.

This probably belongs in the 'Movie Forum'.

I did like the movie though. I'm a big Emile Hirsch fan.

Was not terribly impressed. Predictable, sugary and in the end more apt to cause shrugs than empathy. Peter Weir has his hits... as well as misses.

Rented it as soon as it came out, and I watched it twice. Great show with great performances.

At the end of the film, after the confrontation between teacher and student in restroom, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during that a "father/son" talk (if you know what I mean).

I really liked The Emperor's Club, saw it in the theater and a few times now on DVD. I'm a big Kline fan, and I thought he was great in the role. Plus, it takes a standard inspirational teacher movie and throw in some twists you don't usually see (especially with Mr. Hundert, I think that was his name). Great flick, good DVD.

Out of curiosity, playitagainsam, what does EMPEROR'S CLUB have to do with Peter Weir? This film was directed by Michael Hoffman.

Great movie, by the way. I loved the ending.

i thought it tried to hard to be Dead Poet's Society and just failed. good performance, by Kline, but for a great Kline performance give "Life As A House" a chance.
this movie just didn't do what it tried too hard to do.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was a departure from DPS and have it on my list to buy.

Aside from the obvious similarity of the setting being a prep school, I fail to see the DEAD POET'S SOCIETY comparison.

I went into this movie expecting the same thing, but EMPEROR'S CLUB was very different. I felt DPS was more emotionally manipulative, whereas EC was a little more realistic, maybe even skeptical.

Anyone else listen to the commentary? The director says that when Republicans watch EC, they tend to see Bill Clinton in the Sedgwick Bell character. When Dems watch, they see GW Bush. I thought that was interesting.
