Based on the opening weekend it looked like it was going to beat the first movie and now that is not going to happen.

This is a movie that will survive in the day by days despite less than spectacular weekends. Mostly since it's target audience doesn't have to wait til the weekend since many have time off this time of year. I still see it outgrossing CoS by a bit.
(though that said, I don't think it'll get the same Thanksgiving-Weekend boost that the second one got, so I actually guess they'll be more-or-less on par.)

I wouldn't really say that is the correct thing. I think it's more along the lines that once you get deeper and deeper into a series, it will be harder and harder for that film to have as huge legs and make as much as the previous one since you need folks to already see the others.
the darker tone was nothing to do with it. Just everyone who was going to see it already did.

And it looks like every type of audience was out seeing something this weekend. Oh and Shrek 2 is now the highest grossing animated feature to date.
