Tommaso Albinoni's Adagio in G minor, played at the end of Gallipoli.

Gabriel Yared's score to The English Patient in several scenes, most especially when Almasy returns to the cave.

Thought of one more. An older HBO original movie about the early days of the AIDS epidemic called And the Band Played On ended with a video montage of famous people who had died of AIDS, set to Elton John's "The Last Song." Very sad.

Shania Twain's "Don't" playing over the end credits of An Unfinished Life. It just fit the tone of the film perfectly.

Our Town by James Taylor from Cars, really makes you think how our society has changed from enjoying the trip to getting there in a hurry.

Singing in The Rain being used in A Clockwork Orange really changed the tone of the song.

Sting's songs in Leaving Las Vegas
Sting's " Shape of my Heart" at the end of Professional / Leon
The last sense in Purple Rose of Cairo (absolutely heart-breaking with Mia Farrow's character watching Top Hat.)
Midnight cowboy's theme song

also I like the songs during the end credit of Batman Return and The Crow.

Promentory, the song that plays when Unca tries to rescue Alice in Last of the Mohicans.

The main theme song to Platoon especially during the scene where William Dafoe is running and his comrades leave him behind. Always gets to me.

'On Golden Pond' suite, yeah that's excellent.

'Where Did My Childhood Go?' from 'Goodbye Mr Chips'(Peter O'Toole(a doubly phallic name)) usually gets to me.

Forgot about that one, can't believe it wasn't released theatrically.

Re: Saddest movie songs?

The cover of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko is pretty depressing, esp with the montage accompanying it.

Re: Saddest movie songs?

"The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance, played at the end of The Mist, over that infamous scene. The sound of that piece punctuates what we know Thomas Jane must be feeling.

This Woman's Work from She's Having A Baby

Also, when I was a kid, I used to watch the original Poseiden Adventure a lot. When the lady sang The Morning After I'd get a little misty, because, you know, there wasn't going to be a morning after for almost all of them.

I'd go more with "Together We Will Live Forever" off the same movie. It's the music that is played during the closing credits. Mansell is a genius...

Re: Saddest movie songs?

I recently watched Bella on tv. I thought it had its moments but the best part of the movie is definitely Nina Simone's Nearer Blessed Lord that was featured in the movie which suits the movie very well. Not a sad song per se but it's definitely very touching.

It's a very pretty song, and yea it's quite sad.

Also, while not a "song", Terence Blanchard's score from 25th Hour can make me cry many times during the movie, especially the opening credits with the light tribute to the WTC.

And as mentioned,

Mad World from Donnie Darko
