Saw this last night. Thought it was excellent. Hector Babenco is back in form.
For those of you who liked City of God, you may like this film as well. It is a portrait of a Brazilian prison, and very violent, with many excellent characters. Not as superb as COG. But riveting none the less.

It's Dr. Katz In Prison. Two hours of prisoners discussing what they did to get sent up, telling all to a constantly-smiling, one-dimensional Doctor, followed by twenty minutes of less-than-captivating "riot".
It's an interesting film, certainly, but it had far too much comedy - and worse, insincerity. They almost made the prison seem like a fun place to hang out.
A good film, not a great film.

Couldn't disagree more, I found the humor, not comedy, was very appropriate to the insane conditions of the prison.
You thought the prison looked fun???
I would hate to see the conditions you would find unpleasant.
