Sean Penn in i am sam.

I thought his performance was great, as was his friends (some actually being challenged) and they all carried the film pretty well. I'd imagine it would be harder to lead a film in a challeged role rather than to be a supporting actor (Leo in WEGG).

I voted for "Other" because, honestly, I thought they all did amazing jobs and I was having trouble coming up with a "best".

I know, I know . . . cop-out . . .

Although, if we are including TV, Larry Drake's portrayal of Benny on L. A. Law is hard to top.

Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man wasn't retarded... I think he was autistic.

I really wanted to vote for Ribisi, but had to go with Leo for GIlbert Grape. Really tough call though

Lewis - she's retarded in real life, so it's an unfair advantage.

Warren in Something About Mary did an excellent job.

Steve Martin as Ruprick in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels...

"Oklahoma! Oklahoma! Oklahoma! Oklahoma! Oklahoma!"

I voted for Leo in WEGG

If TV movies count, Mickey Rooney played a retarded man in "Bill" that was very good. That was quite a few years ago though.

almost a dupe

With the glaring omissions of Sean Penn for I am Sam, and Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, I refuse to take part in the poll.

I can't freggin believe you people would condone and use the word "retarded" in this day in age and that mods would let it go on with that in a thread title. I am not nearly kidding.

I have a cousin who has Down Syndrome and the term retarded really doesnt bother me. Why does everyone have to p*ssy foot around everything nowadays.

If your handicapped, your handicapped. Your not "differently abled" or "handi-capable". I know a guy in a wheel chair with no use of his limbs who would roll his eyes at you if you tried to sugarcoat that term. Everybody is so afraid of words these days.
