John Wayne, would he have been a good James Bond

I think so, some what of a "rustic" Bond but still he could made it work.

Think of all the words that are generally used to describe James Bond: suave, sophisticated, wordly, ingenious, etc. etc.

Not one of them apply to the Wayne persona. Not One. He had a lot of qualities, but nothing that would suggest Bond. He never even looked comfortable in love scenes - how un-Bond is that!

cruzness 05-23-04 07:27 AM

Wayne was definately heroic enough but he had that accent and he was not suave or debonaire.
[John Wayne twang]Bond. James Bond ma'am.[/John Wayne twang}

Rivero 05-23-04 08:25 AM

John Wayne as Bond would've been as successful as Charlton Heston as a Mexican in Touch of Evil.

You put it more elonquently than I would of Marty but I agree completely.

Groucho 05-23-04 09:48 AM

I like Wayne, but he couldn't pull off a British secret service agent.

Nick Danger 05-23-04 09:59 AM

I saw young John Wayne in a Republic serial. He looked goofy as an action hero. He's so bulky and slow that you couldn't believe that he'd catch the bad guys.

James Bond isn't like a serial hero, but he still has to run around some. John Wayne is most successful when he does his strategizing in advance, and then he can walk.

John Wayne = the Bizarro-Bond.

"Shaken, not stirred, pilgrim," Bond drawled.

B.A. 05-23-04 10:15 AM

Bacon - what on Earth made you even think about that?

flashburn 05-23-04 10:18 AM

John Wayne = Can't act.

rexinnih 05-23-04 10:20 AM

Love John Wayne movies but have to disagree here.

That too.

I'm with the majority here. I'm a fan but JW would not fit the role at all.

Matthew Chmiel 05-23-04 04:02 PM

Watching John Wayne play James Bond would be ****in' hilarious!

Maybe if the Felix Lighter(SP?) was beefed up Wayne could play that role.

Ronald Colmon would have made a decent Bond.

You should definitely be working for a Hollywood studio, you would fit right in.

John Wayne = Can't act
John Wayne had a very limited range, but withen that narrow area is was very good.

Movies such as Red River & The Searchers are proof of that.

island007 05-28-04 02:56 PM

Maybe as a spoof like Casino Royale.

mljones99 05-28-04 03:21 PM

John Wayne was awesome but he would not have been a good James Bond.

Exactly. I'll put his performance in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance up there with anyone. His timing, delivery, inflections, gestures, body language, ability to give and take with the other performers----he was a highly gifted natural actor, IMO, even if his range was narrow.

But as James Bond??!! What, are you gonna have Walter Brennan as Q, Jimmy Stewart as M and Lee Marvin as Blofeld :)?

Corvin 05-28-04 08:57 PM

Wayne as James Bond? "That'll be the day."

tofu 05-28-04 11:03 PM

I just can't see it: "Hey Pilgrim, martini, shaken . . not stirred"

mikehunt 05-28-04 11:35 PM

personally, I've never understood the fascination with Wayne. granted I haven't seen a lot of his movies, but from what I've seen I'd only put him as an average actor
is it simply because he was an action star of the day?

eXcentris 05-29-04 12:06 PM

Good within his very limited range? Yes. A highly gifted natural actor? No. In fact these two statements contradict each other.

And it should be clear to anyone who has seen The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance who in that film is the highly gifted natural actor. Hint, it is not Mr. Wayne.

And John Wayne as James Bond? I think it's time we start testing thread starters for illegal substances usage. :)
