John Wayne, would he have been a good James Bond

Think of all the words that are generally used to describe James Bond: suave, sophisticated, wordly, ingenious, etc. etc.
Not one of them apply to the Wayne persona. Not One. He had a lot of qualities, but nothing that would suggest Bond. He never even looked comfortable in love scenes - how un-Bond is that!

Wayne was definately heroic enough but he had that accent and he was not suave or debonaire.
[John Wayne twang]Bond. James Bond ma'am.[/John Wayne twang}

I saw young John Wayne in a Republic serial. He looked goofy as an action hero. He's so bulky and slow that you couldn't believe that he'd catch the bad guys.
James Bond isn't like a serial hero, but he still has to run around some. John Wayne is most successful when he does his strategizing in advance, and then he can walk.

John Wayne = the Bizarro-Bond.
"Shaken, not stirred, pilgrim," Bond drawled.

Maybe if the Felix Lighter(SP?) was beefed up Wayne could play that role.
Ronald Colmon would have made a decent Bond.

I think so, some what of a "rustic" Bond but still he could made it work.

John Wayne = Can't act
Movies such as Red River & The Searchers are proof of that.

personally, I've never understood the fascination with Wayne. granted I haven't seen a lot of his movies, but from what I've seen I'd only put him as an average actor
is it simply because he was an action star of the day?

Good within his very limited range? Yes. A highly gifted natural actor? No. In fact these two statements contradict each other.
And it should be clear to anyone who has seen The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance who in that film is the highly gifted natural actor. Hint, it is not Mr. Wayne.
And John Wayne as James Bond? I think it's time we start testing thread starters for illegal substances usage.
