I was watching a lot of his films on TCM today. Hmm...
Dustin Hoffman is one of my favorite actor's. Every single poll option (excluding other) are his best.
But I chose Midnight Cowboy. I love how he went from The Graduate to Midnight Cowboy and completely changed his mental and physical characteristic traits.
I was blown away by him in Midnight Cowboy. To the much copied "I'm walkin' here" to the numerous cafe scenes to
...Ratso had me on the streets with him or in his "ratty" apartment with him...not watching him on a screen.
I love Tootsie as well, but Midnight Cowboy is my favorite.

Rain Man, he earned thet best supporting actor award,I still think Cruise got screwed though, he should've at least gotten serious best actor consideration

Not an easy choice, and arguments can be made for each of those titles. I went with All The President's Men as the best film starring Dustin Hoffman, because despite the fact that we know the ending, it's edge-of-your-seat intensity survives repeated viewings.
Now, as for the best Dustin Hoffman performance - again, not an easy choice, but I'd probably go with Tootsie only because there are times when Dustin Hoffman doesn't exist and we only see Dorothy.

I thought this one would be easy--The Graduate running away. Then I saw the list and he's in a lot of my favorites (Papillon, Little Big Man, and Marathon Man, amongst others). I still pick The Graduate, but it's not as clear-cut as I woulda thunk.

While I was truly wowed by "Straw Dogs" it is far from a great film, let alone great DH film. That said I think it is a toss up between "Midnight Cowboy" which was way over the top and and quirky and there is no way you could picture anyone else in that role and "Kramer vs. Kramer". His fatherly desperation was so raw and emotional that it was pure acting and acting at it's finest. He made that movie the Oscar caliber it is today. Him and only him. If you go back and re-watch it and just focus on DH in that role it really is unbelievable what he accomplished!
