Troy looks to be dropping around 52% from last weekend, less than Van Helsing but still a bit steep for uberbudget flick #2 this summer.

Sequels tend to do well on opening weekend plus it's on 4100 freakin' screens.

True, but this is a sequel that actually lives up to the hype.

I will be seeing this again. I laughed my ass off! I love the humor! The starbucks across the street from another starbucks was just classic! Knights was also another high point of the movie....cat nip :lol:

This fractured fairy tale is breaking records as its mending a heretofore
soft summer.

The widest release ever is about to yield the biggest bow for an animated
movie ever (topping 'Finding Nemo's $70.3 million), likely the second best
weekend ever (behind only 'Spider-Man's $114.8 million) and the first
uber-opening of the summer. And the $95 million weekend projection might
be conservative given the variables with grosses this massive -- not to
mention that 'Shrek 2' was enjoying a 70% Saturday increase over its
already phenomenal $28 million Friday in many theaters as of the evening.
Saturday has an outside chance of topping 'Spider-Man's $43.6 million as
the biggest single day gross ever. We'll post the results on the site on
Sunday morning.

'Shrek 2' is now well-positioned to become the #1 movie of the summer (May
usually spawns this), just as its predecessor reigned over summer 2001
with its $267.7 million haul. Going into the season, common wisdom had
'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'Spider-Man 2' as the
movies to beat for the crown, but 'Shrek 2' is on a $300 million
trajectory -- a gross that seems rosy even for Harry and Spidey.

When 'Shrek 2' garnered $11.8 million on Wednesday, DreamWorks was
heralding the dubious milestone of "biggest mid-week opening for an
animated movie," topping 'Pokemon: The First Movie's $10.1 million. Turns
out, only two days later, they would find such groping for records would
be unnecessary.

Though 'Shrek 2' was huge on Wednesday and Thursday, grossing $20.9
million, it's behaving as if people didn't realize it opened on Wednesday.
Generally speaking, a mid-week bow will soften the weekend and the
Wednesday-Thursday gross will make up at least 25% of the 5-day bow - and
usually far more for saturation releases. For 'Shrek 2,' Wednesday and
Thursday will amount to less than 20% of the 5-day haul.

"I think ('Shrek 2's Wednesday bow) probably helps the weekend, unlike
other Wednesday openers which can dilute it," DreamWorks head of
distribution Jim Tharp told Box Office Mojo on Thursday. At the time,
Tharp thought 'Shrek 2' was headed for a $60-65 million weekend as did
many in the industry.

DreamWorks' exit polling on Wednesday indicated that 60% of moviegoers
were families -- the first 'Shrek,' like most animated movies, was 80%
family out-of-the-gate and then fell to 60% in its second weekend --
suggesting a broadening of the audience since the original. Among
families, two thirds were mothers and one third was dads, while 60% were
girls and 40% were boys. Among non-families, it was a 50/50 split between
males and females and those over and under the age of 25. Moviegoers loved
the picture overall as 81% rated it "excellent" and 11% "very good."

'Shrek 2' has revived the dormant DreamWorks, and it bodes well for their
aggressive-for-them summer slate: Steven Spielberg's 'The Terminal'
starring Tom Hanks on June 18, the Will Ferrell comedy 'Anchorman: The
Legend of Ron Burgundy' on July 9 and the Tom Cruise thriller 'Collateral'
directed by Michael Mann on August 6 -- all three of which are candidates
for $100 million plus.

million second weekend (down 29%). At this point, the $150 million
production looks like it will end up with $140 million tops.

They're saying $44.3m now, ahead of Spidey. And about $104.5m for the weekend, $125m since Wednesday.

Rather than take my family of 4 to see them, I usually take the cheap way out and rent the DVD.

Nice to see Shrek 2 make $105 million this weekend even if I didn't like it that much. I was scared we weren't going to have a "blockbuster" film this summer (especially after the "lackluster" openings of Van Helsing and Troy). :)

I just don't get how the film made $20 million on the first two days of it's release total and on it's third day makes $25 million easily. I know it's a family film and all, but did people not realize it came out on Wednesday?

Like you were when you said Mean Girls would drop out of the Top 10 after the first week. :lol: It's still in the top 5! Is that a hit yet?

They're still trying to figure that one out, it appears a lot of people did NOT know it came out Wednesday, or perhaps they just couldn't get there.

That said, our local radio station kept airing promos that said Friday, dunno how far spread that actually was but I found it odd.
