I couldn't even finish watching this movie. I didn't like it one bit. I do like The West Side Story and Dancing in the Rain, but Chicago was just terrrible. I haven't seen MR yet and after seeing Chicago, I'm not sure I want to.

I didn't like Chicago, and I liked it even less after all the Oscars and hype it got. This movie is hugely over-rated. It has no real meaning, and it's all flash. Anyway, I liked Moulin Rouge, because at least that was innovative and entertaining, and told in an interesting way.

I was thoroughly disappointed in Chicago. It's not worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence with Moulin Rouge. Its "biting" commentary on showbusiness is lame to say the least (Singin' in the Rain does that so much better), the performances are contrived, the stars seem tired, the songs aren't really any good, and the story is badly constructed to boot.
But what bothers me the most about the film is that it gets the very essence of the movie musical all wrong. By placing most of the elaborate song-and-dance sequences in the characters' imaginations and fantasies instead of the movie's reality, we never get that excuisite sense of a world brimming with music, grand emotions and movement. All good musicals are set in a "musical realty" of sorts; Moulin Rouge certainly is, and Chicago, depressingly, is not.

While Moulin Rouge is depressing, it is one of the best movie I've ever seen. While Chicago ended I couldn't help but feel hollow. It was good, but didn't have that greatness that Moulin Rouge had. How the hell did it win Best Picture?

Hated Birdcage before I came out. Still hate it afterwards.
Chicago, on the other hand, is one of my all-time favorites. And I saw it before most people did so totally wasn't influenced by the public at large. In fact, I think I was one of the first people to post about it on these very boards. Absolutely fantastic.
this movie sucked ass. anyone can look good dancing if you are changing the camera angle every 1.6 seconds....awful terrible camerawork. It gave me a headache.

Chicago was the best movie of 2002. Just a staggeringly great experience.
Moulin Rouge was, in comparison, utter shit. Headache-inducing garbage for those who enjoy spoonfed, MTV-style editing over anything remotely substantial. All IMHO, of course, but MR is simply garbage.

Guess you missed About Schmidt, The Pianist, Bloody Sunday, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Hable con ella, Spirited Away, Adaptation, LOTR: The Two Towers, 24-Hour Party People, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. All are pretty good, and all better than Chicago

As for my opinion - I really like Chicago, though the oscar was undeserved, and an american actor (with a better voice)should have played Velma. Bear in mind, I'm a Catherine Zeta-Jones fan; I've followed her performances in movies and TV for more than ten years.
Also... the fact that Matt Millheiser, quite possibly my favourite critic, hated Moulin Rouge puzzles and saddens me.

Rob Marshall's got an ugly style. He tries to fit too much in, editing stuff together too quickly. As a result, for example, we don't get to see Richard Gere dancing; we get to see his back, his legs, a quick shot from the side, and a silhouette... never a good shot of him dancing, though. That's a little insulting to Rivero, don't you think?

If it makes you feel any better, I really loved MR when I first saw it in theaters.... but on DVD, I felt the Emperor had no clothes. I do like cake, though.

I liked both Chicago and Moulin Rouge but overall thought that MR was a better film. I would have preferred it if MR had an original score rather than recycle Elton John songs.

I also enjoy both the Star Wars and LOTR movies.
Why choose when you can have both?

I really don't understand all the hate for either movies. All of the arguements in this thread are purely an opinion stated as fact. If you didn't like it then fine. No need to senslessly bash it or make up facts. They were both well done movies. Obviously neither are the worst movie ever made and if you think they are you need to watch more movies.
I for one loved both of them.
