Feel Good Date Movies.......

I was just wondering what your thoughts/opinions were on favorite feel good date movies. I was pleasantly surprised with Amelie, I didn't find it too girlie for a love story.

You got any recommendations?

You mean good "Make Out" flicks, like Schlindler's List?

By feel good date movies, I assume you do not mean "chick flicks" like Notting Hill and Forces of Nature.

If you are willing to go vintage, I would say It Happened one Night (1934) starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colburt. Although it is a romantic comedy by definition, it is absolutely hilarious in many parts, and is not too lovey-dovey. It was Best Picture back then.

Another vintage one would be His Girl Friday, which is definately more spit-fire and fast paced (i.e. not the best for making out, but still romantic at its heart).

Feel Good might be the wrong phrase, but Intolerable Cruelty is a farily new release that my wife and I enjoy. Great lines, funny, and enjoyed by both in a feel good sort of way.

These are just off the top of my head. Good luck!

Yeah, you got it, no chick flicks, but entertaining movies that aren't typical action flicks or horror movies.

Thanks LVM

Might help to know what kind of "stuff" your would-be paramour is in to, otherwise would be too hit-and-miss for proper recommendations.

That being said, some of the flicks on my personal pick-list are:

- L.A. Story (my personal litmus-test; if she doesn't "get it," she gets taken off the to-date list)

- Hero (the Jet Li one - imho a better flick to see with a gal than Crouching Tiger)

- The Sure Thing (ah, those classic goofy Cusack films)

- Blade Runner (the Director's Cut - surprisingly leads to great philosophical conversations with the gal. Start her off with "so, you think Deckard's a replicant?")

- Bound (Gina Gershon, Jennifer Tilly, lesbians - need I say more?)

- Bram Stoker's Dracula (sexy, moody - but ignore the horrendous English accents)

- Bring It On (peppy, fun, and not as bad as one would immediately think)

- Chicago (almost as good as the stage version, and you get to save $85!)

- Moulin Rouge (anachronistic? yes. creative? hell yeah! nothing will give you the smiley-willies like Jim Broadbent doing "Like A Virgin.")

- Blues Brothers ('nuff said)

- Leon (stick to the definitive version(s))

- Eat Drink Man Woman (yes, techincally a "chick flick," but you gotta love the simple beauty of it)

- Glengarry Glen Ross ("we're just talkin' here, right?")

- Sneakers (great ensemble cast and an engaging plot)

- The Hudsucker Proxy (the best of the Coen films imho)

- any of the Miyazaki films by Studio Ghibli

Plenty of others, but the above is an eclectic-enough sample to give you an idea. Oh, I've also found that getting her started on a mini-series that she has never seen (Shogun, Buffy, etc) is a good way to get her in for some semi-longterm return viewing).

Enjoy!

For a real barf-o-rama, watch almost anything Julia Roberts and chase it with a Reese Witherspoon flick, like Sweet Home Alabama.

A good date movie needs to be one thing... Not her taste. That way she won't be totally fixated on watching the movie, get it...

Come to think of it, when I was in college, one of the girls in our group of friends didn't put out all that much , but would sleep with almost any guy who watched Gone with the Wind with her, and actually finish the movie. Perhaps thats something to consider.

Regarding L.A. Story, it is a great movie and all, but if you have never been to LA (or at least So Cal) some of the jokes don't jive as well. Born and raised in So Cal, I found this movie hilarious, but my wife doesn't "get it" at all.

Didn't stop me from marrying, her though. That is a little harsh.

...comes to my mind when I thought of this topic. Not a big genre of mine, but this movie took me by surprise. There are others, but this surprised me and right off the bat...

My wife enjoyed it, but she's got a thing for Kiefer Sutherland movies.

That sounds lika bargain if I ever heard one. I know a girl just like that, I just wish "Gone with the Wind" held up better after repeated viewings, but I'm sure she feels the same way about me.

Watch Punch Drunk Love with her... if she digs it... then man oh man you're set.

And then if she'll watch any Fellini with you.... marry her.

Here's a few for ya:

Punch Drunk Love (not your typical love story, but usually brings out a smile. Can also double as a litmus test to see if she "gets it")

Shakespeare in Love(The Bard has an uncanny knack for making women swoon.)

The Princess Bride(What woman doesn't love a fairy tale?)

p.s. Let us know which you end up choosing and how the date went

I'm surprised nobody mentioned porn yet, but perhaps something like a Buttman video is a different way to break the ice.

I forgot all about that crappy movie. And we went to see it and walked out early what a waste of good money that was.

yuck
