A tie - they were both magnificent in their own right.

Gcomeau 05-05-04 09:41 AM

Vol 1

Skull 05-05-04 10:12 AM

Vol.2

flixtime 05-05-04 10:43 AM

Vol. 1 - 8/10 (or a little higher especially if you include the color version of The House of Blue Leaves)
Vol. 2 - 4/10 (felt that a lot of the film should have been left on the cutting room floor)

Groucho 05-05-04 10:52 AM

Vol 1 -- OMG! SO AWSOME11 KIX AZZ 10/10

Vol 2 -- WTF? PEOPL TALKIN??? SUX 0/10

This thread reminds me of what Bud said about comparing 2 Hanzo swords.

But I'd have to go with 2 right now, just because I think I've finally watched Vol. 1 one too many times. (but give a me a day or two and I may feel different). Plus I really loved the first set of cast credits.

tsamfan 05-05-04 04:21 PM

Tough, but I'll have to go with Vol. 2 here. I loved Pai Mei, the music and the credits.

Rivero 05-05-04 06:13 PM

Although I voted for 2 because in the end it's the more emotionally satisfying of the two, it is also considerably more flawed and frustrating in that it approaches greatness numerous times but never quite makes it. I find it interesting that some here still attest that it's a return for Tarantino to the great writing of past films. Tell me, where is this in the movie? Everyone here can quote whole lines and scenes from nearly all of his films. What exactly are the memorable lines from this movie? Where are the instances of great Tarantino-esque writing? Or exceptional writing by ANY measure? The film works because of the fantastic Oscar-worthy performances by Thurman and Carradine, but even they are a bit let down by the haphazard final section of the movie, the annoying child performance, the throwaway Esteban sequence and shoddy unremarkable dialogue. I don't know what Tarantino was thinking with some of the writing here but Carradine's pontification on Superman, in an effort to be profound, comes off as laughable and downright stupid. Insulting even. Like I've said, I still prefer it to Vol. 1 because it tries harder. But by the same token, and is usually the case, that means it must fall harder as well.

I disagree with all of your criticisms Rivero. Matter of fact, right now the Tarantino movie I quote more than any is Kill Bill V2. Mostly Bill, Budd, and Pai Mei lines. Matter of fact the quotes page at the IMDB is the most visited one on the site, and I don't mean by just me. Also, there has been some heavy debate about the Superman speech, so I think it will be very memorable.

I think without Perla as BB the last act wouldn't have worked at all. She was a little kid, you either find them cute or annoying, I found her to be real cute, cute enough care. The way she interacted with Uma and David was great, they felt like a family to me.

I also loved the Estaban scene, it was funny, and on repeat viewings I enjoy it even more. I guess it could be cut, but I wouldn't touch it. I think it works as a great transition scene between Elle and Bill.

Matter of fact I think The Final Chapter may the best thing Tarantino has ever created. If only for the fact that it's the most emotional scene (along with Massacre at Two Pines) in any of his films. Chapter 6 and 10 could make a stellar short film, but thankfully that isn't all there is. I thoroughly enjoyed everything inbetween.

Thanks for letting me remember why I love Kill Bill so much.

Vol. 1

shaggy 05-06-04 08:35 PM

Vol 2 just rocked my world. It was so different than i expected. The over the top action of the first one was cool, but was in danger of becoming Matrix reloaded. Vol 2 is an entirely different kind of film, which is great, so as a whole you have a film that is every genre combined.

mljones99 05-06-04 08:44 PM

both were great but I will have to say I enjyed Vol. 1 just a little bit more than Vol. 2

Calculon 05-07-04 07:02 AM

To paraphrase Uma in PF, "So are you a Volume 1 man or a Volume 2 man?"

Seems pretty evenly divided so far.

The entire last act was wonderfully written.

"You're about as useful as an ******* right here."

"You good with that shotgun?"
"Not that it matters at this range but I'm a ****ing surgeon with this shotgun."

All of Pei Mei's dialouge was hilarious.

"Now if you don't calm down and play nice then I guess I'll have to shoot you in the kneecap, which, I hear, is a very painful place to be shot. "

Rival11 05-07-04 05:56 PM

Vol. 2 - easily.

cultshock 05-07-04 06:06 PM

I love both dearly, but Vol 1 is my favourite (so far). It has more of a feel of my favourite film genres (HK marital arts and Japanese samurai films, although I do like spaghetti westerns too) and I just can't resist what I imagine is the film equivalent to crack. It just pushed more of the right buttons for me, although Vol 2 is awesome as well.

I love Kill Bill as much if not more than anyone here. But I thought this was actually the worste line in both volumes. For someone who has an encyclopedic knowledge of movies as Tarantino does, he seemed to have forgoten that nearly that exact same line was used in "The Rules of Attraction". That aside, I'm in the camp that the second half of Kill Bill is definitely some of Tarantino's best writing.

RyoHazuki 05-07-04 06:19 PM

I thought it was funny.

drjay 05-07-04 06:36 PM

2.

I despised vol. 1 and vol. 2 has me kind of wanting to watch it again... it's tough to change my opinion that much.

I'm glad you liked Vol. 2, but why on earth would you want to see a movie that is the second half to a movie you "despised". Clearly there was something about Vol. 1 you like, thus you could not have despised it.

I absolutely love all of Tarantino's other work (I'm kind of turning into an auteurist I think -ohbfrank-), and after hearing from multiple places that it wasn't just a bunch of action, and was very character-driven, I decided it would be worth it. Plus I go to the movies at least once a week and there isn't much playing at the two theaters in Champaign, IL.

Shit, I thought I heard that line somewhere before. Maybe it was a "homage" to former friend Roger Avery, or it was an expression they both used back in their old video store days and they both put it in their respective scripts (I'm assuming the line wasn't in Brett Easton Ellis' original novel of Rules...).

Darkfriend 05-07-04 09:49 PM

Vol.1 for sure. But I'll probably appreciate vol. 2 more once I watch it as a whole movie with vol. 1...

I was bummed out that we didn't get to see Budd fight, and even though vol. 2 is more narrative and story driven, I felt some bits should have been cut.

No, it was wonderfully acted. Uma and Carradine were certainly up to the task of elevating the shoddy writing.

DVDHO 05-08-04 02:56 PM

To me it's hard to pick a part since it is 1 movie cut into 2 part's,it's like saying did you like the 1st part of BraveHeart or the 2nd part of it better, but since it is a poll I picked Vol.1 just because I love action even though I do think the second part had better dialogue.
