Re: Re: Director chosen for "Watchmen"
|
Well, I'm glad this is finally moving along a little bit. I'll certainly reserve judgement until seeing it, but can't picture a single movie doing the source justice.

Apparently AICN got it right.
July 23, 2004 'Watchmen' unmasked for Par, Aronofsky "Watchmen," the seminal DC Comics limited series, has landed at Paramount Pictures. Darren Aronofsky will develop and direct the project, which is being written by David Hayter. Aronofsky's producing partner Eric Watson will produce with Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin. "Watchmen," created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, was released as a 12-issue comic book in 1986 and is one of the most critically acclaimed series in the genre. The comic is credited for redefining the superhero genre and is often referred to as the "War and Peace" of comic books. It is a crime-conspiracy story that provided the first realistic look at the behind-the-heroics lives of superhero archetypes |
I know Aronofsky's out.
So who would you guys have direct it I think this guy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004675/ would be a pretty good director for it phil alden robinson |
The Incredibles felt like an animated kiddy version of the watchmen.
|
This info has been in David Hayter's IMDB bio for the longest time:
Wrote a 324 page screenplay addaptation to the graphic novel "Watchmen" by Allan Moore and David Gibbons which has been hailed as one of the most accurate translations of comics to films ever written. |
I recommend Terry Gilliam, who was in the running at one point.
I just doubt the studio has the money to realize his vision. ;) |
I have a feeling one of three things will happen:
Most likely... 1. The movie will be castrated and over simplified for mass audiences. 2. The movie will come close the comic(yeah right) and the public and critics will HATE it. 3. The makers will make a movie that has nothing to do with what the comic was trying say. |

I don't see why anyone would want to make a movie on this. I mean, I love the book, it's excellent... but turning it into a two hour movie would lose all of it's appeal. The story is great, but cutting it down to two hours would totally alter the story. The characters are great, but cutting it down to two hours would alter them to the point where they'd just be the basic sterotype superhero characters that they would first appear to be anyways. And anyone can make those - it's not like the public will see them and recognize them.
So odd. |
Michael Bay should do it. Nick Cage as the Comedian and Will SMith as the Owl
|
As several have mentioned earlier, this should be a 12 hour mini-series for HBO.
After that, they should do a 7 season series of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" books. Then an ongoing series of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" books. Then I could die happily. |
or Jay, you could just read the books and be happy with them :)
|
If this ends up as 1 movie, we'll have another LXG...er... I mean, League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen on our hands.

Script Review of Watchmen

The article date on that link is 09-09-04?
|
Yup. I just happened upon it because they linked to it on an interview they just had with David Hayter.

I read a draft of "The Watchmen" a while back... I think it was the Hamm draft... and I didn't really care for it.
The problem with "Watchmen" is that the story is just so huge and detailed that removing anything is going to fuck it up. If anything, it needs to be an HBO miniseries and a straight adaption of the book (ala Sin City) with a CGI Dr. Manhattan, and the Black Freighter excerpts could be crudely animated. |
The Sam Hamm draft is abysmal. I mean, REALLY REALLY bad. I'm SO glad it was never produced, simply because it would have killed comic book movies for at LEAST two decades.

Hidden in one of the <i>300</i> trailers. Yes, really.

Interesting...
No way in hell that it can be made into a two hour movie but that's a pretty cool shot. |
Nice shot of Rorshach but I hope it's far from final. The mask is supposed to be a form of latex and the pattern a liquid within the latex that's always changing. The mask in that shot is fabric and the pattern is obviously a print. Still, a step in the right direction (at least visually).
|
Considering they haven't even started filming yet, I'm guessing that was just a thing done quick and on the cheap.
