What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

3. When signing up, put down Dvdtalk_gcribbs in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

4. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

5. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

6. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Rememeber, new players: add today's "Bottom Feeder" (Dvdtalk_gcribbs) as your referral when signing up!

I currently have 44 players on my list...but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm missing somebody. So if you see anybody missing, speak up!

Also, in our leaderboard are three players who joined in the last week: MrN, rushmore223, and genapp! It just goes to show that it's never too late to join in the fray.

I think it is impossible for me to make any money. Maybe I am not trying hard enough.

Or perhaps you're trying too hard?

Thanks for the tip on TeeSeeJay. He's been added.

I have 45 as well, so I think the list is up to date.

Thanks for the weekly update, and congratulations on taking first place.

I have thought about that, too. I may just need to be more patient.

I think I have one player too many... Is JUICE84 not a player on here?

Also, those unfamiliar with HSX might want to take the opportunity today to pick up some calls and puts, they can be a good way to make some cash fast.

He wanted to be in the league, but didn't want to start a new account, so he's not in.

I'm surprised to find myself already in the top 10 so I thought I'd talk about my strategies.

As already mentioned, surveys come out once a week and check 'Cold Cash' - its easy money.

Don't bother with the high priced blockbusters - especially if you only have $2M to spend - most of my money is on stocks of less than $10. And deal in short-term stocks - if you really want to buy something for the long haul, wait for Saturday.

A lot of stocks tend to be over-valued so don't be afraid to short.

My best performing stock this past week - HERO. It was under $10 on thursday and its at $15 now, so I've made about $250K on it.

Just in case anybody notices the name, DVDTalk_luckymepooh is my wife, so no, your not seeing double.

She mainly wanted to kick my butt at this game.

This weekend is going to be a tough call.

Man on fire is going to be on fewer theaters and the general idea is that it will meet it's 20mil call while 13 going on 30 has more theaters 3400 and it's pull seems to be on the rise. a tough call indeed

I can't imagine Man of Fire making over $20 million. There is very little buzz/promotion for this movie, and I don't know anybody excited to see it.

My gut feeling is that 13G30 is going to knock Man On Fire on its bottom. But yeah, I've been wrong before!

Too bad 13G30 is dropping like a rock - I knew I should have sold it this morning! Oh well, I am going to hold all of my stock over the weekend and see if I learn anything.

I think Man on Fire will do better over the long run - if word of mouth is good.

I'd hold on to 13 going on 30. It's a date movie, something women of all ages will be interested in and men won't mind seeing (Garner)

If I had Man on Fire, I'd have dumped it by now.

I do plan to hold on to my 13G30 stock. I don't have much MANFR stock, so it shouldn't hurt me really if it does poorly.

The general idea going around is that 13 going on 30 will make between 20-24 for the weekend and man on fire will hit in the mid teens.

Question, if you short a CALL stock for the weekend, when it gets cashed out on monday does it automaticlly give you the cash since it went from the 2.00 bucks to 0.00?

Yes. So if you shorted 10,000 shares at 2.00, and the film doesn't make the call, you'd get back 40,000 (minus commission).
