I think Q just likes to get in and whisper his direction into Uma's ear. There's a great interview with both of them in this week's Rolling Stone that focuses on Uma as Quentin's muse. Worth reading if you're a fan.

FYI: if you look at the insert on the Pulp Fiction ST, there is a photo of QT giving directing to John Travolta in a similar style. He is not standing behind the guy, but he is whispering in his ear.
