21 Grams - good flick or what?

I made a blind buy on this, and was glad I did. It's a great film, with top notch acting.
I disagree that the editing was a gimmick. Having stuff out of order forces the viewer to pay more attention. As such you notice the intricacies more, appreciate the acting more etc.
Or at least that's the effect it had on me. It kept more more engaged in the film. Not to mention, that the plot is pretty thin and would likely have been rather dull if shown in order.

Just got done watching it. I thought the acting was amazing, the look was perfect, and in my opinion, nothing was overdone. worth a buy? well, not for me (decided to rent after reading all the comments - thanks everyone) but I can definitely understand why people would want to shell out the cash for this great movie.

Liked the movie but as others have said, without the great acting this would not even be as good as it is.
Now a question about the ending:

BTW: I think the way they edited the film was a plus, not a minus. I think this film would lose a little if it were told in the actual order it happened. It had me thinking I knew what was going on an in the end, things were different than they seemed.

Just finished watching this one, and I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was kind of weird for me because I watched Mystic River last night and seeing so much Penn in a 24 hour period got me a bit confused.
Overall, I loved the pacing, learned to love the editing (as it was a bit challenging to piece things together at first), and the performances were top notch. Definitely worth a rental, don't know if I'd want to watch it over and over. If you're on the fence about this one, check it out! Can't complain about Naomi Watts either.
Something I noticed: Sean Penn's friend at his post-surgery party in 21 Grams (the one who catches food in his mouth) is played by the same actor that plays one of the crazy brothers (Jimmy's friends) in Mystic River. Coincidence or Bizzaro world?

It just came to the cinema here (Turkey), so I watched it last nite out of sequence too. Agree with the comments that editing made the film, Watts was terrific, Penn & Del Toro played their roles from other films.
Just wondering. Does the DVD have seperate chapters for all the sequences? If so, you could random play it and perhaps get a better, or more confused, sequence. A chance to re-edit - just for the fun of it.

Personally, I think it's an excellent movie. Just extremely depressing. Keep that in mind before viewing it. All three leads were outstanding. And I thought Sean Penn should have been nominated (and won) was this role.

I bought two copies the morning it was on the shelves
We also drove the state searching for the theater that showed it here back when it premiered. I've heard on here that it's getting re-released in SE form so I'll wait for the SE if you haven't picked up the bare-bones yet.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is one of my favorite directors, and that's based solely on my exposure to two feature films and two short films that he directed..

I'm such a big fan of Iñarritu that I drove the 2½ hours to NYC to catch this when it premiered. I liked it when I saw it and I bought it the day it came out but I haven't gone back to seen it yet. I think the movies high points are lower than the ones in Amores Perros, but I still don't like the middle third of Amores Perros, so the valleys are less deep. A good film to me.

Easily one of the very best films of 2003. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to watch it in chronological order.
That being said, there are two reasons why I do not own the DVD. One, it is virtually without features at all and I am convinced that someday they will release a better one. Two, it is not a film that has a lot of rewatchability.

I agree that the non-chronological editing added to the movie. It made me pay attention and really try to follow what was going on. The performances by Penn, Watts, and Del Toro were all top-notch.
