I don't see the stories as being all that similar at all, other than they both happened a long time ago and a long way away (though not temporally or geographically near one another), and that both main characters have their wives killed.
Braveheart is the story of a man elevated to the status of warrior. Gladiator is the story of a general reduced to the status of slave. Braveheart is about a rebellion; Gladiator has a side plot about the stirring of Roman dissention against the emporer, but that is of little or no importance to the main character.
The similarities are superficial, as far as I'm concerned.

I love both movies but I have to go with Braveheart. The very last scene the king says "You blead for Wallace now will you bleed for me?" then the big guy whips the sword and they all go running out to battle.... Wow! what a scene! Even though you can tell the big guys ax is rubber.

I'm going with Braveheart. It's just a better movie in my opinion. While it's true the film does paint a fairly black and white outlook on Brits versus Scots, the film still manages to carry the feeling of the times, the grit of the times, and the gruesome nature of battle. Not to mention, the film sports a very emotional edge, that involved me and had me caring about the story and the characters.
Gladiator...is a good lil action movie. Those fight scenes kick ass. But I found the story and plot to be truly bland. You had this epic story that involved like...a few people. Most of whom I found to be very disinteresting and very lacking in emotional involvement. The film looked great though, and the action scenes were excellent. But as historical and dramatic narrative, I found the film to be severly lacking.

Braveheart for me. Gladiator was the beginning of a creative downhill slide for Ridley Scott, imo. The man who used to make masterpieces like Alien and Blade Runner now makes contrived Hollywood tripe, albeit with a lot more violence than he would normally use back then.
That said, the weakest Lord of the Rings film, The Two Towers, is better than Braveheart and Gladiator combined.

Easy, Braveheart.
Gladiator was such a hollow piece of crap. No substance, just going through the motions. Kind of like Matchstick Men. Looks great, but lacks a little something to make it stand out above the rest.

So I guess the real question is...who would win? Wallace or Maximus? I prefered Braveheart, but I'd place my bet on Maximus. Heh.

gladiator hands down. better cinematography. better acting. crowe and phoenix were incredible, that's why they both got oscar nods, crowe won and joaquin should of also. i'll take a roman empire epic anyday. maximus is a better trained warrior, hell, he was rome's best general.

For me its not even close. I like both but Gladiator is far superior. Russell Crowe was amazing in that movie. The music was incredible and the colisseum scenes were better than anything in braveheart. I actually thought it was a little cheesy when Mel cries out freedom before he bites it.
