Kevin Smith Fanboy Lameness

From "the official news source for Kevin Smith":

<I>We're happy to announce that Jersey Girl word of mouth seems to be doing well, as the film crossed the 10 million mark in box office this week, AND it's just been announced that the film will EXPAND to a total of 1,821 screens this weekend (up 301 from last weekend). We know a lot of you wanna see Hellboy...Hell, so do we...But before (or after) ya do, <B>go see JERSEY GIRL again</B>! And <B>keep telling folks what a good flick it is.</B> It's definitely a better movie to bring a chick to than Hellboy, fellas. Or hey, you didn't hear this from us...But maybe you wanna <B>buy a Jersey Girl ticket then just go sneak into Hellboy</B> anyway? We won't tell. And we're sure <B>the big shaved horn dude doesn't need your $10 as much as we do.</B></I>

How lame is it that Kevin Smith's news site has this kind of garbage on it? Is he affiliated with the site in anyway? I can't believe how pathetic these guys are being. If the movie's tanking then using the methods suggested isn't really going to help matters.

The title of this thread should be "Internet Sarcasm 101." It's obvious he is making a joke. I dont know if Kevin himself wrote this, but as far as sites go he is pretty active at Viewaskew. For all you know Scott Mosier wrote that. Relax have a glass of water and remember,...no one has the right to touch you in your bathing suit area.

Step 1 would be getting a typical K. Smith fanboy to actually get a chick, let alone have her go somewhere with them.. AM I RITE?

Hey, I am a Kevin Smith fanboy and I have hooked up with a many chicks in my time. I'm offended and now I'm going to leave the forum.

Well, there are ways to defend this, but I would hardly call this a "sarcastic joke" on the end of the Viewaskew people. I think they count on a certain hardcore sicophantic fan element who probably would just buy a JG ticket and sneak into Hellboy. There is nothing take from that to suggest he meant it in a tongue in cheek manner. It's easy to use that as an afterthought defense, but it rings transparent to me.

After last weeks pathetic pandering not to trash the film, I have no doubt this is an entirely sincere request. If you want to argue all is fair in love and war, that'd be one thing. But in the absence of a caveat to this "joke", the sarcasm runs low.

As for the site, Smith gets credit when things go well and he takes the blame when it goes bad. Kind of the peril of marketing your mug on a website. But for the record, this sounds like textbook K. Smith.

I used to take my cousin to Kevin Smith movies and tell her to give me googly eyes during the romantic parts. I'm so smooth.

javanut 04-02-04 11:00 AM

Didn't Smith offer to reimburse anyone who didn't enjoy Jersey Girl?

Think anyone has asked?

Isn't this almost exactly like the one that LOTR fans were sending around the net a couple of months ago.

Ah, who cares really...

The fact that this thread exists makes me want to see Jersey Girl 2 announced, thus signalling the end of the world.

I'd say that post sounds just like Smith. It's unfunny, stupid, and shows that he has no balls...just like the script for Jersey Girl

db27 04-03-04 01:28 PM

I thought Jersey Girl was great.

and I think that post was funny as well.

and I think it would be great if more directors had the same kind of fondness for his fans as he does. makes him tangible and normal in a hollywood world filled with superhero stars and directors.

and I would not consider myself a fanboy. I enjoy his work.

I'm just talking simply about that above quote, where the author compels people to buy a ticket for Jersey Girl and then sneak in to Hellboy, because Jersey Girl needs the money more than Hellboy does. -ohbfrank-

Even if he was joking, I find it odd that Kevin Smith, who is such a comic fan, would joke about taking money away from a comic book film made by a team who actually cared about the comic. It may have had a big budget, but it wasn't done like any typical Hollywood comic book cash-in.

solid point  hadn't thought about it that way.

Yeah, right? Buy our ticket and sneak into any film you want? That's pretty disgraceful for a former-indie, Hollywood-wannabe director, imo.

I've seen all of his films except Jersey Girl, and it seems more and more that he's infatuated with how much money his films are going to make. I remember when they reported that audience feedback for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was through the roof, and they expected huge box office returns.... uh-huh. If Jersey Girl made 200+ million, I would bet his next five films would no doubt be along the same lines, which seems pretty bogus for the 'auteur' of the Jersey Trilogy, or whatever.

The truth is he's out to make a blockbuster, but he knows the Silent Bob character isn't going to help. He devices Jersey Girl with his trusty star, except it doesn't open as huge as Passion or the new Adam Sandler film. So when he goes begging for better results from his fans, which won't amount to much, how can we be surprised? Does anyone know how much Jersey Girl cost to make? I'm guessing 40mil, which he may just clear in the end. However, expanding to 1800+ theaters is nothing. That is why he's pandering like this on his website.

(I'm surprised no other director is calling Smith out on this web post, but most directors are civil enough, I guess.... Remember when he fought with DeVito over his banner, saying he wasn't Jersey enough?)

db27 04-03-04 03:24 PM

out to make a blockbuster? rotfl

yeah right!!! he predicted that his film would roll out 5th for the weekend and had only hoped that it would hold up for a few weeks.

he can't make a blockbuster, he knows that. nor do I think he wants to.

of course however he would like his film to do well, who wouldn't? and the bottom line is always going to be money, cuz if you don't profit than you can't continue to do what you love.

Jackskeleton 04-03-04 03:28 PM

I dunno, I'm sure he never expected that bad of a blacklash when he got jennifer and ben to sign on. I'm sure he was seeing $$ in his eyes. ;)

see I think even if you take away the bennifer gigli aspect that has haunted this film jersey girl it still would not have done better simply because it's Kevin Smith. and in the mainstream he is not taken seriously for better or worse.

ultimately what I'm saying is if Jersey Girl was directed by some no-name then it would have had/and would continue to have more box office sucess.

however Kevin isn't for everyone, and when people see him tied to the film they just go see some other film.

just my theory, but I don't think he'll ever be accepted in a way where he will ever see "$$ in his eyes"

That was a backpedaling move he made 3 days before the film opened.

The fact of the matter is Jersey Girl was his stab at bringing in a broader audience. Try as he might his films only apealed to his die hard fans and consistantly stalled at $30 million. So he makes Jersey Girl to try to open up his apeal, but when it tanks and does worse than his films targeted only at hard core Smith fans he goes running back to those fans beging them to see it twice, buy a ticket but see Hellboy, etc.

Smith's flaw is that he never should have tried to make a "broad audience appeal" movie. He should have been like Woody Allen: Making one consistantly low budget film a year that consistantly earns back its money.

I hope he goes back to that concept.

Re: Kevin Smith Fanboy Lameness

First, to clear matters up: Kevin never wrote that nor suggested buying a ticket for Jersey Girl to get into another flick. That site is moderated by two guys named Brad and Chris, and I'm sure one of them wrote it. So to most of the above posters bashing Kevin for writing that, you should really check your information first.

Second, Kevin's been getting the short end of the deal for most of his films. Due to their ratings, many younger fans buy tickets to some crappy Disney movie to get in to his movies. So while I'm against the practice, it's not like it hasn't happened to him.

And third, if y'all knew anything about Kevin, you'd know that he isn't in it for the money, and has been predicting for awhile that this wouldn't be a blockbuster. He'd be happy if it made the cost of the movie back.

And the Jersey Girl script is one of the better ones I've seen in awhile. Have any of you trashing the movie actually seen it?

-A devoted Kevin fan girl

It doesn't matter who wrote it, if it's an official person working for the site, it shouldn't be up there, because Kevin runs the site and letting the comment stand without even saying "By the way, I don't agree with this" is tantamount to agreement.

It would be like one of the mods here saying "Hey, when you go to see that sneak preview of Kill Bill 2, be sure to videotape it and post it on here." If Geoff didn't stop a mod from doing that, he'd be the one responsible when the site gets sued by Miramax.

It's happened to every filmmaker on the face of the planet. There's always someone who, for whatever reason, can't get into a certain movie, so they buy a ticket for something else and sneak in. It's nothing new, and there's nothing special about it happening to Kevin's movies.

But there's a world of difference in knowing a few people will do it and actually prompting people to buy a ticket and sneak into another one just to bolster the box office of that first film. That is a terrible thing to promote, and if one of the mods wrote it and Kevin lets it stand, then I'm going to feel free to criticize about it until he either makes them recant the comment or at least states he does not agree with doing it.

Kevin Smith does not run Newsaskew.com. He is not resonsible for what Brad & Chris post.

I think a lot of you are taking this far too seriously. That isn't just aimed at the rabid anti-Smith people; I also mean that about the rabid Smith defenders.

Ahh, my mistake. I thought this was the message board attached to his site. Sorry for the confusion.

S Kilpatrick 04-03-04 07:36 PM

Man, I think both sides are just looking silly on this front.

I'm a Smith fan and I liked Jersey Girl, but I don't think it's a big deal either way what everyone does to trash it.

It's just that so many of you are just idiotic about the way you're trashing it, right down to not even bothering to find out where a quote comes from before you start pissing all over it.

It's just pathetic and silly and you could do a much better job of making your point if you tried to act like adults about it.

Also, I'm going to pay for and see Hellboy tonight, but as a man with a sense of humor I'm not offended by the suggestion that people do otherwise.

People make mistakes. The original post made it sound like it came from Smith's site. Since I never frequent any Kevin Smith message board, there wasn't a way I would have known.

It's just pathetic and silly and you could do a much better job of making your point if you tried to act like adults about it.
And yet, calling all of us pathetic and silly is so adult. So mature. Good job.

Also, I'm going to pay for and see Hellboy tonight, but as a man with a sense of humor I'm not offended by the suggestion that people do otherwise.
And if they were serious, would it be so funny? If it were obviously a joke, I wouldn't care. But these guys just seem like fanboys who are desperate to have their boy's movie make more money than what they perceive to be another lame comic book movie.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Nosebleed 04-03-04 07:57 PM

Just to clear things up, this wasn't just a message posted on the messageboard of that site. It was an article of news posted on the main page of the site.

I'm not familiar with Kevin's movies or his official webpages, so I guess if that news was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, I didn't get it. I am aware of his rabid fans and the cult-like following his movies and characters have, so it wouldn't surprise me if that news was posted in a serious manner, knowing that some of his fans would actually do what was suggested.

fumanstan 04-03-04 08:38 PM

Personally, it sounds like a joke and you see actors say the same thing all the time on the interview circuits. I don't see why some people here are trying to make such an argument against Smith over this. I guess people are just as anti-Smith as much as the fanboys love him.

Supermallet 04-03-04 08:46 PM

Or very pro-Hellboy. :D

http://js-productions.com/hellboy/hb_hellboy.gif

S Kilpatrick 04-03-04 09:26 PM

I never called any one person silly, pathetic or idiotic. I said the actions are.

And frankly since they are pathetic, silly and idiotic, it's a far cry more adult than making baseless claims and seeking the smallest issues to trash someone or their films.

Hell, the guy who posted it admits that he isn't even familiar with Smith or his work.

If you dislike the film attack the film, but give actual reasons to hate the film and don't waste so much time acting like a bunch of mud slinging dirt muck politicians.

Wow, so much bashing over a stupid little mindless comment, which by all means reads like silly banter and a sacrcastic remark. I mean, seriously, what's the big deal? Who cares? The seriousness made around this comment is almost as asinine as when people called James Cameron evil for saying "I'm king of the world!" at the Oscars.

It's just a comment. i respect Kevin Smith for doing what he does, and doing well with it. I appreciate the fact he keeps his voice public, and manages to say things that normal people say...in spite of the overly critical media and public. I'm no serious fan of his film work, but I do like his personality and the refreshing non Hollywood kiss ass way he approaches things. So what if he says go buy a ticket to my movie and sneak in...it was obviously said jokingly, and any goof with half a brain will know that there's no chance in hell that comment is going to inspire more than 3 people anyway. I'm sure the person who wrote that knew that also.
