PETER DIAMOND: 1929 - 2004

It is with great sadness that we have to report the recent death of our father, Peter Diamond. He passed away at 4.00am on Saturday 27th March 2004, at Pindefields Hospital in Wakefield, South Yorkshire. Peter had experienced a severe stroke six days
earlier, whilst driving home from the set of 'Heartbeat'.

Peter spent more than fifty years working in film and television as a stunt arranger, performer, actor and director, accrueing over 1,000 industry credits on the way. Condensing his extensive career into a short appreciation like this is extremely difficult. Many people will be familiar with his 'Star Wars' connections. Peter choreographed the action in the original
trilogy of films and appeared on screen in several different guises, most notably as the infamous, stick-wielding Tusken Raider. He was Stunt Co-ordinator on 'Raiders Of The
Lost Ark' as well as 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit', 'Princess Bride', and the first 'Highlander'film - in which he once again appeared on screen, as the Immortal called 'Fasil'.

But these high-profile productions were just the tip of the iceberg. Peter was employed in various capacities on twenty-or-so classic 'Hammer' horror films, a handful of 'Carry-On'
movies, 'The Fifth Musketeer', 'One Of Dinosaurs Is Missing', 'Candleshoe', 'Kidnapped', and 'Alfie'. He was actuallly RADA trained and commenced his stunt career working on
such Golden Age classics as 'Ivanhoe', 'Knights Of The Round Table' and 'The Dark Avenger'. He even appeared briefly as a Tail Gunner in the classic tale of 'The Dam Busters'.

Peter's television series spanned the decades alongside his film work, from the heyday of live television productions right up to the present day. A cross-section of his creditsincludes 'Dr Who', 'Ivanhoe', 'The Saint', 'Sir Francis Drake', 'Danger Man', 'Z-Cars', 'Softly, Softly', 'The Prisoner', 'The Avengers', 'Last Of The Mohicans', 'Return Of The Saint', 'Dick Turpin', 'Minder', 'Jeeves An Wooster', New World's 'Zorro' series, Highlander: The Series', 'Where The Heart Is', 'Jonathon Creek', 'One Foot In The Grave', 'Rosemary and Thyme', and of course 'Heartbeat'.

With so many credits to his name and who-knows-how-many fleeting appearances to boot, 'Peter-Spotting' had become something of a family past-time. In due course, this web space will be used to detail his extraordinary career, so this jolly hobby might be taken up elsewhere!

For now, though, we mourn our father. His funeral is being planned for the week commencing 5th April and more details will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. We are having difficulties tracking down many people involved in Peter's life and must apologize if anyone has been overlooked during this sad time. His bio from his official website.

bio

In a career spanning nearly fifty years, stuntman, actor, producer and director Peter Diamond has worked on many of the films and series, and with many of the performers that have defined modern cinema and television.

His early projects included working with the legendary Errol Flynn in The Dark Avenger and on the series Errol Flynn TV Theatre. More recently, as well as constant work on series like Heartbeat, Peter was brought in to train Sir Anthony Hopkins for his role in The Mask of Zorro.
As well as arranging the action for the first three 'Star Wars' films, Peter played the Tusken Raider who attacks Luke Skywalker.

He also featured as Garouf Lafoe and Cprl. Prescott.

Peter taught Harrison Ford how to throw a screen punch for Raiders of the Lost Ark, used a torn pair of trousers to convince Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher to swing across the Death Star chasm in Star Wars, fought on behalf of Robert Duvall on top of a speeding train in The Seven Per Cent Solution, and got his head lopped off by Christopher Lambert in a car park in Highlander.

Peter choreographed the swordplay and battle scenes for the first 'Highlander' movie. He also played the role of Fasil, who has his head cut off in the underground car park!

Mr Diamond has directed episodes of the TV series' Zorro and Highlander, worked with new Bond villain Robert Carlyle in Looking After Jo-Jo, and has been involved in many episodes of Z-Cars, Dr. Who, Danger Man, The Prisoner, The Avengers, The Saint, and The Return of the Saint, Sherlock Holmes, and many, many more.

Peter choreographed the cliff-top swordfight in'Princess Bride' - considered one of the finest film fights of recent years...

Three Carry On films, more appearances in the original Star Wars films than the main cast, a Muppet movie, a Tarzan film, Dracula films with the great Christopher Lee, and a turn on a windmill for a Solvite advert.
The list of Peter's achievements is endless. So, if you've ever wanted to learn how to use a lightsabre, then try learning from the original Jedi Master; the one who instructed Luke Skywalker.
And Darth Vader. And Obi Wan
