Alexander Payne's Sideways

Clip from Sideways with Paul Giametti:

I loved Payne's About Schmidt. This looks . . . interesting.

Should be good. Payne has proven himself a worthy filmmaker in my book, so I'll check it out.

Now, THAT is a clip. Payne is the man, and that clip just got me amped up to see this film. I heard it was about a cross country road trip between two friends. Can't go wrong with a road trip movie.

I saw Sideways yesterday at TIFF. It was pretty damn decent. Payne does a great job balancing the HEAVY dramatic material with the very light and funny stuff. The movie really works because of the outstanding performances by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. Who would have thought NED had it in him?

It's very similar in tone, style and feel to Taylor and Payne's other movies. It's definitely going to get some buzz going and should do well with audiences, it's highly entertaining. My only complaint is the film is about 20 minutes too long...it's length started to wear on me by the end. Any fans of Payne or Giamatti will love this flick and it's great to see Sandra Oh getting some decent work.

In regards to your Sandra Oh comment, I have read that she is also quite good in the 2002 film "Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity"

I cannot wait to see this, am checking out a sneak of this tonight with Payne in attendence for a post screening Q&A.

This is getting a limited release Friday (the 22nd). Anyone know what theaters it'll be hitting in Orange County or LA? I'll be in town for a few days and thought I'd catch it.

Metacritic has given a high score 0f 93 so far.

Could be an Oscar contender.

I am not really a fan of Alexander Payne's work. I didn't think much of Election and can't seem to get myself to sit down and finally watch About Schmidt whenever they show it on HBO. But this movie is getting a good rating, so it will nice to watch the buzz of this movie grow.

this is a great film, the chemistry between all the cast members/characters is flawless. The writing is clever, funny and contains enough pathos to encapsulate a very believable human bond between the films multiple protagonists.

Favourite narrative 2004 commercial release of the year - highly recommended!

Isn't Lowell Mather in this movie? He was awesome on the TV show "Wings" as the dumb mechanic. Good to hear that he's still on the scene.

man...i can't believe this thread hasn't been bumped!! Saw this tonight and it was simply fantastic...and it's sitting at 88 for 89 at rottentomatoes. The Salon.com nimrod who apparently has some issues with payne bashed it, but otherwise, the praise is universal, and deservedly so. Giamitti deserves a nomination or three for this to be sure. And Church is equally surprising.

Go see this movie.

I want to go and watch this movie badly but it's not playing anywhere close to where I live.

Also I found out reading an article about the movie on Entertainment Weekly that Sandra Oh is married to Alexander Payne. I'm fan of her work.

I saw it yesterday, and thought it was great. The church scene was filmed down the street from my house. That was a nice little suprise.

Saw this with my fiancee on Friday night and we loved it. The funniest and best film we've seen this year. Since we're both getting into wine (touring wineries, always looking for the next great bottle), this was right up our alley. There were scenes where we laughed at the dialogue while others didn't because it was funny to our wine-laced sensibilities. Several times I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.

Paul Giamatti deserves an Oscar nomination and Thomas Haden Church is hysterical.
