while the acutal set up wasn't that funny, the press chasing Jason Lee's character was too funny. (also, we would'nt have those really bad adr lines).

I love the movie as it is also. I think it was good to cut that opening. I think the only that could have helped the movie would've been different casting of T.S. and his girlfriend. Jason London and Claire Forlani just don't seem to fit in this movie.

If you're talking about the original opening (with the long crane shot) on the DVD, I'm going to have to say it's better with it left out.
It was just long, boring, and overall, not funny.

Brody makes the movie =P and I think the press chasing him, and his talking about the devil worshipping going on at the Svennings' is hilarious. I think that the alternate is just kind of too awkward though, the cut was necessary. But hey that's what deleted scenes are for.

I like the opening the way it is now. I also agree that Jason London is not good in the film and Claire Forlani was miscast. Everyone else is great though.

"A two and a half hour comedy about malls? Who the hell would want to see that?"
The film is great the way it is, through I'd prefer if they chose some different actors (*cough*Jason London*cough*) and if Smith and Moiser were allowed by Gramercy and that ******* Jim Jacks to do basically whatever the hell they wanted. The film could've been years ahead of it's time.

Ain't it odd that Jim Jacks was on the clerks commentary and both of them sounded like buds. (one could have been kissing the other's ass but they sounded like they liked each other)

Glad they left it out. Thought it was funny that Smith kept saying he was subconsciously remaking Animal House with that opening. That's not too far from the truth.

I wouldnt mind a 2nd DVD with the "longer" cut but i am more than happy with the current cut of the movie.

Very drawn out opening imho and it's better without it.
On the other hand, it's still better than the alternate ending to "Clerks" on that DVD
-- Kevin Smith wouldn't even have a career I suspect if that awful ending had been released, but I'm glad it was on the DVD for curiousity's sake.

That alternate ending to Clerks should be burned.
And as for Mallrats, it's fine as it is (except the scene where Silent Bob's head comes thru the wall should be longer).
I tried to watch the alternate opening and I felt like the people in MP's Holy Grail "Get on with it!"
Works fine as it is, and it's a good movie.

Here's my question: Would Mallrats have been better if Smith had actually filmed the other opening sequence he had planned? This is the sequence which was never filmed, but was in the original screenplay. The scene was another game show, a college quiz bowl-type show, which would have provided an interesting set of "bookends" for the film.
I agree that London and Forlani were totally out of place.
