I'm so sick of movies setting classic novels in the present day. It would be genuinely cool to have it set in the late 19th century, with the Martian machinery more or less appearing as described. Having the ships walk through the landscape, crushing vehicles, and firing heat rays is something that I really want to see visualized.

The Vine: ILM enlisting for Spielberg's 'War'

Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds," which just got an accelerated green light from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks, is likely to reteam the director with VFX whiz Dennis Muren and Industrial Light + Magic. Producer Kathleen Kennedy is already beginning negotiations with the Northern California effects house, and Muren is likely to oversee the job, with Paramount exec Mark Baski supervising for the studio. As it happens, Muren was in Los Angeles this week taking meetings while also attending Siggraph, the annual computer graphics confab. The shot count for "War" has yet to be determined, but it is not expected to be as large as some recent summer films. "Minority Report," overseen by ILM's Scott Farrar (while Muren worked on "The Hulk"), contained about 400 shots, while "Artificial Intelligence: AI," on which Spielberg and Muren last collaborated, had close to 300 shots. If ILM does land the job, the timing would be fortuitous: The facility has nearly completed work on Paramount's "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" and is looking at boards for shows with late-winter/early-spring starts. Do we even know whether or not the movie will take place in present day or in the late 19th century?

Same thing I was wondering.

The inital post had a blurb from Variety saying it was set in the present day.

"War of the Worlds" set in the present day...um...so isnt that pretty much "Independence Day"?

My expectations just plummeted. How does this hack (and it's appropriate that he wrote something with the same name!) keep working, and on so many high-profile projects?
Sure he's no shakespeare but he's no Goldsman either... there are a few duds on his resume but come on:

Jurassic Park
Spider-man
Panic Room
Stir of Echoes

these are some decent flicks.

With the exception of Stir Of Echoes which I haven't seen, those are precisely the type of films I'm complaining about. Each and every one of them was harmed by one of Koepp's paint-by-numbers, workmanlike pieces of milquetoast writing.

He's not going to help this film, and it's going to exacerbate Spielberg's biggest problem as a filmmaker, which is that he does not have good authorial and editing skills when it comes to scripts; if he's given a mediocre one he seems to have no impulses to improve it. If he is given a great script, he makes a great movie. That won't be the case this time.

Speilberg and Cruise really impressed me with Minority Report, so it's great to hear the release date has been pushed up.

Other than A.I., every movie Spielberg has made since Amistad has starred a Tom.

Deja Vu??

Wasn't there a lot of buzz about the remakes of "The Time Machine" and "Planet Of The Apes" ???

And what did we get????

I didn't think either of these excelled the original.

Well, I am definitely from Missouri on this one!

Any '70s-early '80s movie by Spielberg will blow his recent work out of the water... and yes, that includes "Schindler's List" and "Private Ryan"... Seriously, what do you think he will be remembered for in 50 years from now: "Jaws" or "A.I" ? "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Catch Me If You Can" ? How many here even bothered to watch "Terminal" ?

Even the most feverish Spielberg advocates will have to concede the guy is a washout. He hasn't done anything good in years, all he's interested in is schmaltzy, sappy stories (I shudder while thinking of the syrupy end of SPR)... and unnecessarily updating a story - while foregoing the fascinating opportunity to really make a disaster movie set up in the Victorian era (can you imagine the 1890's London atmosphere in the hands of a talented designer and director?) - should make it clear to anyone that another bad flick is on the way.

I don't recall anyone exclaiming "Simon Wells AND Guy Pearce?!?!?! No way! This movie is gonna rock now!"

Day-um! I guess Chris Carter can just toss out the idea of ever showing the alien invasion in a future X-Files movie.

A.I. is still one of the most incredible films of the last decade in my opinion.

I will still never understand why people don't like that movie. Creepy, good acting, great special effects.

I'd like to see Steve Spielberg direct a really intense drama, something different for a change.

It'd also be nice to see him work without Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise too.

But I'm sure I'll see War of the Worlds about 3 or 4 times in the theatre.

Rivero and Terrell,

Your opinion might be different than mine, so let's leave it at that. As for "dumb things", Terrell, if your reply is an example of smartness, you're the one that needs help.

I hesitate to post it, because the more people that show up, the worse my odds are. But I'd feel awful if I didn't spread the word. For those anywhere in the Athens NY area, there will be a open casting call this Saturday for extras. Info is here .
