I'm a bit more skeptical. I think it'll have great graphics, but a so-so story. It's made some of the list of worst movies last year from Japan. Yes, shocking, I know.

Here’s my take on it after seeing it last night.
It was very, very good, but I wasn’t prepared for how “Miyazaki” it was going to be. Otomo’s stuff seems much more tech whereas Miyazaki is heavier on warmth. This was situated in one of those Miyazaki otherworlds but minus the warmth factor. The tech was beautiful. I mean-Steam powered powered-armor? Cool.
The animation was top notch. Things like the effect of a bullet being shot into the surface of water were things to be admired.
I really liked it, but didn’t realize how much I’ve become accustomed to Miyazaki things. When this turned out to be similar without the signature sentimentality, it threw me. Like I was distracted by this nagging in the back of my head. It took me a while to put my finger on it.
In any case I will be buying this when it comes out on DVD. I also will go see it again in the theater and probably get more out of the second time. There is a lot to catch visually.
Whatever you do, sit through the credits. I had to pee like a madman, but it was worth it.
Credit, not movie, spoilers ahead:
The credits were one of my favorite things I took away with me.

okay, this annoys me, as it turns out the only screening times of the subtitled prints (in DC at the E Street Cinema) are the final show of the evening. Here's an explanation why, it doesn't surprise me, but it still annoyes me:
As for STEAMBOY, it was decided that the English language version plays better to a general audience, and that the best time to screen the Japanese version for hard-core anime fans would be final show of the day. Sorry if that’s inconvenient for you…
oh well..

I saw the dubbed version tonight. And while Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina do a very good job.. I'd like to see it in its original japanese. Also, it seemed like some scenes were cut, which makes me want to see the original even more.

Ok - went to see it tonight... sat through one hour of it... and walked out. I don't often walk out of movies, but this one was pretty bad. I'm sure alot of it had to do with the voice acting, but overall the story was just excruciatingly dull. I'm sure later in the film things get really crazy and magical and awe-inspiring, yada yada blah blah... but if the first HOUR didn't grab me, why sit around and wait? I was checking my watch every 5 minutes thinking 30 had gone by, I was staring at the wall next to me, I was closing one eye as if to catch some sleep while still watching the film. Some of you may remember me being quite a fan of anime and I really don't mind slow moving dramatic pieces - that's not what bothered me. This film had no heart (the first half anyway) and it had no characters to like whatsoever. It was just a terrible movie (only commenting on the first half). The person I saw it with felt exactly the same way and we were both into anime and familiar with the work of the creators and in the mood to see it. Major let-down.

And I thought they could have made Scarlet less of a brat.

Just saw it yesterday. Nearly forgot about it in the greatness that was Sin city. The first half was kind of slow but it got going on the second half. I did get distracted by the steamboy looking so much like the kid from Akira. Heck he even had his own bike, a steam powered bike mind you. It is a feast for the senses. A must see for lovers of anime. I did notice many kids there and a baby. I'm not sure this is a kid movie but I'm really sure this isn't a baby movie. Lots of stuff blow up that are going to scare kids. What the heck were his or her parents thinking.
I now want to see the original Japanese version but think I will wait for the video. The theater I saw it at was to dark. I think it would be hard to read the screen they had it on. I saw Sky Blue at the same place but it didn't have that problem.

bringing this back from the dead...
watched this tonight... I thought it was pretty good actually... here's a quick checklist hehehe...
I'm sure there's more I'll remember later, but overall I was pretty impressed... I was very satisfied with the movie, based on my purchase hoping it'd match up to my experience watching Akira.

yeah, I had watched it yesterday morning and I was surprised to say that I quite enjoyed this movie alot more than I thought I would. I didn't mind the pacing of the story (which other's have found to be a deterence). The CGI/cel animation is flawless and downright fascinating to watch. Now I know this is rather sacriligious to say, but I actually stopped listening to the Japanese language version ten minutes into the film, and watched the rest with the English dub, and I have to say I thought the English cast was great. It kind of made sense to hear this in English since the story does take place in London, England. Technically though, the soundmix seems less aggressive than the 5.1 Dolby Digital Japanese language version.

Anyone pick up the giftbox? I had it in my hands but thought I'd hear what others thought of it... what's another day

Just watched this tonight.
I thought the animation and directions were really good.
Unfortunately, the story was very hard to sit through. I kept thinking that something would pick up, but I think it bogged down more and more.
I suppose I thought the story would revolve more around him trying to find the steam as a coming of age/travel story. Guess not.
Perhaps the best sequence was at the end after the massive buildup.
Thanks for the tip on the credits. I had turned it off half way through, but went back to watch. I hadn't really paid attention and figured they were random art pieces from development.

I've got the DVD and I really liked the movie, but I was a bit put off by the strong anti-capitalist politics of the thing. It really got heavy handed and that bugged me.
Other than that, though, I thought it was really good. The animation was amazing.
