BEST musical before 1970?

BEST musical before 1970?

(I noticed how the previous poll for 'Best musical' just went in the wrong direction and also realized that musicals before and after 1970 can't really be considered on the same page)

Look for another poll for musicals after 1970.

(Do NOT include animated films!)

Other films to consider:

42nd Street (1933)
A Night at the Opera (1935)
Top Hat (1935)
Swing Time (1936)
A Day at the Races (1937)
For Me and My Gal (1942)
Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
Cover Girl (1944)
State Fair (1945)
The Pirate (1948)
On the Town (1949)
Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949)
Summer Stock (1950)
An American in Paris (1951)
The Band Wagon (1953)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
A Star is Born (1954)
It's Always Fair Weather (1955)
Oklahoma! (1955)
The Court Jester (1956)
High Society (1956)
Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Les Girls (1957)
King Creole (1958)
Flower Drum Song (1961)
The Music Man (1962)
A Hard Day's Night (1964)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
Oliver! (1968)
The Producers (1968)

Not only do I consider "Singin' in the Rain" the best musical ever made, but also one of the top five greatest films of all time.

HOLD IT...

You listed Mary Poppins as a poll option and not the Music Man?!?!

I'm disappointed smirnoffski. First Grease 2, now this. I demand a recount!

If Duck Soup is considered a musical, then I vote for Duck Soup. Of the more conventional musicals, it would be West Side Story.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC, followed closely by MARY POPPINS. What can I say - I like Julie Andrews.

Why isn't SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS on that list?

My wife is torn between SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and OKLAHOMA!.

I would have listed The Music Man, Oklahoma!, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and more films but after all, there is a 10 entry limit folks!

Amen to that . . . it's my all-time favorite (so you got an "Other" vote from me). It's followed up very closely by State Fair. Of course, The Sound Of Music always has to be listed up there, too.

"Those women were sobbin', sobbin', sobbin, buckets of tears . . ."

On a slightly related note, does anyone know if there are any plans to do more with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection? Seven Brides For Seven Brothers got an awesome SE release and I really don't want to get the collection if they decide to do the same with them. Of course, I also have a big problem with the fact that Flower Drum Song isn't even in it (or availible on DVD for that matter), but that's a different issue.

Sorry for the off topic . . .

While The Sound of Music, Westside Story, and The Wizard of Oz are all excellent, Singin' In The Rain is simply one of the greatest films ever made in any genre, so it easily tops the list as best musical before 1970, and I would say just as easily tops the list for best musicals in any era.

I love many of the choices listed in the poll, and grew up watching Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz, West Side, Mary Poppin and Singin in the Rain multiple times.

Maybe because I only recently discovered The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (about 3 years ago, thanks to this forum) - I voted for Other to indicate it as my current favorite.

Another I really, really love is High Society....a swinger, a crooner, and ol' Satchmo!

Singin' in the Rain - my second choice would have been one of the Fred & Ginger films.

Best Musical before 1970 and half the choices are from the '60s. WTF?

I vote Meet Me in St. Louis. But you missed a lot there. Not enough from the '30s and '40s (aka. the golden years of the musical)

Wizard of Oz.

It was the first movie I ever saw, and will always be my favorite.

I like these, but you should have included A Hard Day's Night.
It's a rock and roll musical!

I guess The Girl Can't Help It and any decent Elvis movie would have been good to choose from as well.

I got 'em the other way around. West Side Story followed closely by Singin' in the Rain. Tough call...very close.
